No! Do not feed this to your pet! My dog has been on grain free Blue for the past 12 years and started developed bladder stones in 2015. I started her on W&U grain free and within a few months her urine pH was perfect and no more issues. She was almost completely out of food and to my shock grain free was no longer and option so we switched her to this. Tear stains, food avoidance, and now today she vomited in her crate and urinated blood and she urinated blood everywhere after I cleaned her up (now waiting to see the vet). I’m so unhappy that her previous food was suddenly taken away after a successful 8 years and now I have to search for a new brand of food and pray her bladder stones aren’t back / won’t require surgery.
Our Kelpie has had UTI's and a surgery to remove some pretty serious stones. She was at the time prior to the surgery on one of the "big two" prescription urinary care brands which obviously did her no good. After the surgery we switched to the other of the big two and she continued to have UTI's which are, of course, associated with formation of struvite stones. So that one didn't help much either as she still showed "sediment" in her bladder. Our vet was also reluctant to prescribe the Blue Buffalo brand as it ws her opinion that there were not sufficient feeding studies to demonstrate effectiveness of the W+U formula. Yes the formula has changed but please keep in mind that 1) per our vet, the grain free foods were potentially lacking in certain amino acids, particularly taurine and 2) the original W+U grain free formula used pea protein instead of grains such as brown rice (more expensive that pea protein). Pea protein has been studied (medical studies as reviewed by the FDA - references to these studies, particularly the FDA review, are available online) as a potential contributor to Dilated Cardiomyopathy Our dog has been on the W+U formula for a couple of months so it is too early to shout Eureka but so far so good!
Well, so far so good....but I think it is really too soon to tell. At this point I am still weening my Shih Tzu off of the old grain free formula. She gets a 50/50 mix of old and new twice a day and 1/5 can of the same wet food she was on previously. My goal is to reduce the old formula down to 25/75 mix until it is all used up. At that point if my girl stays free of any bladder infections for about 6 months I would say the new formula is as good or maybe even better than the old. I will say one thing....she does seem to like the new formula a little more and she has not had any upset stomach or gas which would occasionally happen with the old formula. I will be happy to update this review after about 5 months. Thanks for asking.
Being the owner of 3 horses I am a total food quality nut and the same goes for my 3 dogs! Sadly my little chihuahua mix Minnie has had 2 bladder surgeries in 2 years so sadly she was requires to eat another persc Food which is filled w preservatives and low quality ingredients! Well sure enough fast forward 2 years of eating the recommended diet which are two different brands we all know about and she developed serious breathing problems in her nose due to severe allergies skin lumps pale coat , listless energy.... lethargy! I just knew something had to be done so back I go again on the Internet trying to find a urinary formula thats is more holistic and then I found the blue buffalo wait and urinary care!!! I called my vet because it requires a prescription and she actually said although they have not been a fan of that brand in the past they have redeemed themselves and done a great deal of research and created new formulas such as the prescription care about which has become more impressive to them!! She approved the prescription in for the past three weeks my dog has been on this new food and I can tell you this, it has been a total godsend!!!! Minnie is 9 years old and she has her energy back her coat looks beautiful she wakes up with a skip in her step every morning and plays with her toys!!!! She chases the other dogs in the yard and her breathing is 1000 times better which has been a real relief!!!! She absolutely loves the flavor of this food and that is great because she's a picky eater and mix it with a tiny bit of chicken or steamed veggies regardless but I am very grateful to blue Buffalo for creating a much-needed holistic formula for urinary care! I have even notice that she has her bikini body back!!!!! She is beginning to show a waste line again! I hope that all vets start to carry this food to help dogs with bladder issues issues!!!!
My dog absolutely loves this food! He is super finicky and licks the bowl clean. He’s lost 5 pounds and now eats this to maintain his weight. It’s also helped to keep his struvite stones away!
Astro suffers from several food allergies and this food has been a boon since his vet prescribed it years ago. Yes, the formula HAS changed... but if you follow veterinarian medical bulletins you will have probably noticed that long term studies are now showing that grain free diets are causing heart issues! The decision to add grains back to this blend was no doubt to address this health concern.
Be aware - this is not the same formulation even though they kept the packaging the same. Look very closely for that 'wholesome grains' line, they don't make you aware of the change in the description. Very disappointed by both the change to include grains and keeping the packaging almost identical, it should be made very clear that this is a very different product. My dog has relied on this food since having bladder stones years ago, now we will have to search for another food for her.
This is the only dry food that I’ve found that all my dogs will eat. I wet it was warm water, let it sit for 2 minutes. It makes a makes a nice broth. It smells pretty good and satisfies them during their major weight loss program. They’ve lost weight and are satisfied after they eat. This is my second bag for 3 little dogs. Next month I’ll bring my 2 older dogs in to retest their urine for crystals. Hoping they’re gone or have decreased. My compliments to the chef!
My dog has been eating this for years but grain free option and now it is new with grains. So disappointed.
