An antihistamine that is given orally in order to manage allergies and atopy in dogs and cats.
Chlorpheniramine is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice to use this medication in dogs and cats. The usual dose for dogs is 2-8mg every 8-12 hours. For cats the usual dose is 1-2mg every 8-12 hours. Do not open or crush the long-acting capsules.
Chlorpheniramine works to remedy contact, inhaled, or drug-induced allergies in dogs and cats by blocking the effects of histamine in the body.
This is not the same pills I got from the vet. I need to cut them in half. This was not easy because they didn't break in half. Always one side was bigger than the other. Then I needed to crush the half pill. These were too hard to crush easily unlike the ones I got from the vet.
Fast & easy- Chewy.com does a great job! Thanks for contacting the vet to get more meds for our Bella.
When it was determined that my 10 year old had allergies, the vet prescribed this medication for him. He immediately started acting out of character. The cat who had slept on my pillow every night since he was 8 weeks old quit coming to bed. The cat that was super loving and always wanted attention quit coming to us even when called (which he NEVER ignored us before). The cat who was extremely playful, lost interest in everything. He just lied around sleeping all day. He wouldn't even climb onto his perch on the couch to sleep either. He didn't have the energy to leave the floor. He ate, drank, used the litter box, and slept. There were times we had to shake him because we thought he was dead. Every time I tried explaining this to the vet, she acted like I was overreacting and crazy. She kept telling me that he needed to stay on the medication. However, I refused to give it to him after a while because his quality of life was the worst. A few days off the medication and he started returning back to the cat he was before starting this medication.
My vet recommended this medication for my indoor only 17 year old cat, who after some blood tests was determined to have allergies. Everything else was normal. I had to split the pills in half and give her a half every 12 hours. We had no problem as the pill was tiny, and she took it easily. I also had a company come to my house to clean out all the duct work, which made a huge difference. She did not have skin itching or rashes, just lots of sneezing going on. She tolerated the pills well.
My GS was in misery I had tried everything but nothing worked. No time at all and she was not gouging and chewing her self to death. It is a miracle
Vomiting 3 nights in a row and now to the v e t... And he only got a tiny bit of the tablet.
