The result is an excellent clumping litter that prevents moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray, while providing a clump that will not break down. Ultra is perfect for multi-cat families and those cat owners with sifting or mechanical litter boxes. Like Classic, it has superior odor control.

Key Benefits

  • Contains no plant proteins
  • Hard clumping, medium grain clay
  • Multi-cat formula, superior odor control
  • Ideal for sifting/mechanical litter boxes

Additional Details

Using this is like filling your litter box with pebbles and concrete mix. The granules are so big that most of them roll off poop; very little poop gets covered and the smell is noticeable. Even worse is the granules' moisture absorption. It's so poor that most of the pee deposited in corners sinks to the bottom. The outer surface of the pee clump is hard. The bottom of the pee clump - where most of the pee sinks to - is like quick-drying concrete that only partially dries. The scraping requires subsequent shoveling of the wet scrape-out into loose, dry litter until it no longer sticks to the scoop so it can be deposited into a bag. The whole exercise is frustrating and time-consuming. Additionally, there's significant tracking of litter within a few feet of the litter box. The big granules apparently get stuck in the cats' paws much more than smaller-granuled litter. The only positive about this litter is it has almost no dust. But that's far outweighed by the negatives. … more

  • What did I buy?

    By on

I was looking for a clumping cat litter to replace Arm & Hammer light weight that would track less. I read a ton of reviews and decided on the Ultra. Like another review said, the 40 lb bag was ripped when it arrived but so was a box of litter I previously ordered from Chewy (I believe it has to do with the shipping). Other than that my experience differs greatly from the rest of the reviews. It is difficult to scoop and sticks to the bottom of the box like cement. I have to scrape the bottom of the box repeatedly to get all of it. It sticks in the slots of the scoop so I have to clean the scoop by hand after every wet scoop. The tracking around my house is much, much worse than A&H. I I was looking for a clumping cat litter to replace Arm & Hammer light weight that would track less. I dislike this litter so much I think the balance of it will be used to gain traction in the snow (I live in New England and we get a lot of snow). I will not buy this product again. … more

  • Great product, BUT about the packaging...

    By on

I've ordered this litter about 4-5 other times in the past (first the small box, and now 40lb bags) and absolutely love it all around. Although, in my most recent order, my bag had a small tear by the seam and some litter was falling out. I'm not sure how packed the bags are before shipping, but some litter could have been lost before it was initially shipped. There was some litter in the box when it arrived, but not a significant amount thankfully. Also, the tear was on the opposite side from where I opened the box. This was the only reason I was skeptical about ordering the bagged litter, but the price for 40lbs over the others is undeniable. Honestly, I just try and wait until I can use a whole bag at once just to avoid those concerns all together. … more

  • Not good with litter robot

    By on

Bought this thinking it would function better and track less with my litter robot and was very disappointed. Very very dusty, a cloud sits in the dome for a little bit after refilling and makes me a bit worried about my cats digging in it. With two cats I usually clean out the bottom drawer once a week or so but this starts to smell in a matter of days. The clumps in the drawer are still wet looking so no wonder. It does hold together and cycles well but isn't suited to something that isn't emptied daily, I even have the cycles set to 15 min to give time for solid clumps. Would not recommend if you have a litter robot if you don't want the box smelling like soiled hamster trays.

  • Great product

    By on

First, I loved ordering from chewy and not having to drag 40lb litter bags home from the store, and shipping was very fast. This is simply awesome cat litter, and I've tried many many different brands (of clay-based)--scented and unscented, with or without added "deodorizing" sprays and powders, you name it. This litter is just supreme. I've always preferred scented over unscented, but this is so effective at trapping the "stuff" that it doesnt need a scent. There's hardly anything left in the box to smell after scooping. I've also found that I don't need to rinse/clean out the litter box as often. With other litters, the urine clumps stick to the sides of the box, but not with this brand First, I loved ordering from chewy and not having to drag 40lb litter bags home from the store, and shipping was very fast. It makes a solid, contained rock, for the most part (you do need to give it sufficient time to harden though or it gets messy). I highly recommend this litter and its superior clumping action. … more

  • Great litter, not the best odor control

    By on

I've tried many litters for my stinky cat. Dr. Elsey's hits most of the marks: very hard clumping, it's as easy to scoop as they come; doesn't make my cat smell like a chemical factory; not much tracking, relatively low dust. My only complaint about the product is that the odor control could be better, but that's likely a trade-off for not having more artificial chemicals. As for the packaging, about half the time there are small holes in the bag and it leaks some litter into the shipping box; they need to use thicker bags for this. I'd also never order anything fragile along with this (or any other 40lb object), it will get destroyed.

  • Best Litter I Have Ever Used

    By on

I have been using this litter going on 4 years now. I have had cats all my life and really hated all the dust! This litter honestly has NO dust. I don't see or smell dust when I fill the cat box, scoop, or while my cats go to the bathroom. I currently have 4 cats and so far this litter seems to hold up. It hides the scent without having to smell some perfume! It seems to clump and last a long time... especially with 4 cats! My mother also uses this cat liter in her automatic scooping litter box and there is still NO dust! I'm amazed and thankful!

  • So far..pretty good

    By on

Just purchased this. Dr Elseys brand did not choke me to death from the dust like other litter brands. I'm trying it out in one box because I currently take care of 13 litter pans. (These are not inside my house, they are outside on a screened porch). It's kinda pricey. It definitely clumps up better than some other brands I have used. No dust and good clumping of the wet stuff, just a wee bit more than I can spend to maintain all my litter boxes. Wish I could use it in all of them.

  • Kitty Digs It

    By on

No scent, and very little dust. Very good at clumping, too. My kitten was not burying her "business" with other brands. With this brand, she is. The litter is soft and the granules are small. I use the Nature's Miracle Just For Cats Advanced Hooded Corner Cat Litter Box, and it takes a 20-lb box of this litter to fill it! I've not had any issues with any of her business getting stuck to the bottom of the box. There are a few granules outside the box, but I think a walk-off mat would easily remedy that.

  • Less smell Less waste

    By on

My first time using this cat litter did not disappoint even though it was mixed with some older litter ( AH Slide) the clumps were super tight and easy to scoop without crumbling and contaminating the rest of the litter. Having 3 cats, the cost of quality litter becomes expensive! We dump the remaining litter every week even if it still seems useable, because of the leftover crumbs and odor. I think a fresh box of Dr Elsy is going to last much longer, be easier to scoop, smell less and ultimately save time and money. Hope they don’t change the formula or jack up price
