Questions & Answers

7 Customer Questions

Is it okay for Leopard Geckos?
Answer by ChewySep 19, 2019
This sand may not be the most suitable substrate for leopard geckos as there is a risk of ingestion which could lead to impaction.

Is this good for bearded dragons?
Answer by ChewyOct 10, 2017
This product is perfect for desert Lizards, Snakes, and Tortoises.

Would this be good for a tarantula
Answer by ChewyJan 31, 2021
This sand substrate is not recommended for a tarantula. The best substrate options to allow a tarantula to burrow well would be coco fibre, topsoil, or a peat moss mixture. The most important thing is to ensure that you pack your substrate down hard. This allows your tarantula to construct a burrow a lot easier than if it was loose.

How much would I need for a 40 gallon tank?
Answer by ChewyJul 24, 2019
We suggest using 1 pound of substrate per gallon, to achieve a 1 inch bed or 2 pounds per gallon, for a 2 inch deep bed. For a 40 gallon tank, this would be 40-80 pounds, depending on the depth needed.

My bearded dragon wasn't happy

The sand was not great my dragon didn't like it she though a fit about the sand was a waste of my money should have got the red or yellow sand

Big hole in the bag

As I received my package not too long ago but today I noticed that there was a hole in the bag because the sand was going through the box itself I was not very happy with this because most of the sand in the bag was already gone. It is hard enough to get sand from stores but I didn't think this was going to happen with Chewy.

Great sand!

I actually bought this for a hamster sand bath and it’s great! I was wary of using the black, but it was the cheapest by several dollars, and it actually looks really good in the bin.

FOR LEOPARD GECKO OWNERS AND PROBABLY OTHER REPTILE OWNERS. BE CAREFUL WITH SAND

Sand can cause impaction issues, I know for sure with leopard geckos because they like to lick a lot more than other reptiles. Use coco fiber, carpet, kitchen liners, anything other than sand. This product is very misleading because it has a leopard gecko right on the product.

Great sand

I usually use bagged top soil for my beardie we had some left over red sand so I made a beach strip along the side of her tank she has made it perfectly clear that she prefers the sand. They are TEN lb. Bags so u will need one bag for every 10 gallons u are trying to fill. And yes its dusty when it goes down so keep ur pet in a separate enclosure until it settles or blow out the dust. Once it's down I havent experienced any more dusting. Considering to the cost of this product in store and its limited availability well gladly keep ordering it here

Dusty Sand

Although it is nice the sand acts as dust and the slightest touch causes a stir of dust

To pricy for amount received

I think it is a good product but I purchased 2 bags and it still wasn’t enough for my 40gal tank. If you received more for the $$ then it would be worth it

Works well

Reptilite, with calcium grains is better. Not been able to find it tough and stores are expensive.
