Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

Great value, seems on par with far pricier food

By Laura on May 18, 2021

I switched to dry dog food after a few years of dealing with feeding raw, which was almost 10x more expensive (and more work) for my two dogs. Before I found Skoki, I tried another super premium dog foods, included dehydated/air-dried raw. They were fine, but I spent a lot of time obsessing over ingredients and feeling frustrated that the grain-free trend meant most of those expensive dry dog foods were adding legumes and decided to expand to try out grain-inclusive foods. That went fine. Surprisingly, I saw no difference in my dogs’ quality of life, perhaps other than the larger poops. (It’s true, raw fed dogs have smaller poop, but I’m not sure that’s worth a few hundred dollars more a month I switched to dry dog food after a few years of dealing with feeding raw, which was almost 10x more expensive (and more work) for my two dogs. That went fine. Surprisingly, I saw no difference in my dogs’ quality of life, perhaps other than the larger poops. (It’s true, raw fed dogs have smaller poop, but I’m not sure that’s worth a few hundred dollars more a month.) One of my dogs started needing a few hundred dollars in physical therapy and another hundred dollars in expensive meds due to arthritis and I realized that I desperately needed to save money in other ways. I also realized that I was putting so much time and effort thinking about their dog food that it was downright obsessive and that I needed to stop thinking that the right food would make my dogs immortal. Enter Skoki. The price is pretty unreal for 40lbs of dog food. I had 180 (combined) pounds of dogs to feed and it was really nice to not need to buy 3 bags of dog food at a time. Skoki has been fine — I’m not going to use superlatives, since it’s just a basic dog food, but it doesn’t have any ingredients that I worry about and my dogs had zero negative effects from eating it. My older dog has since passed away from old age, but it actually helped keep weight on him because he was often nauseous at the end of his life and was a very picky eater in general but since Skoki is very nutrient/calorie dense it wasn’t too hard to make sure he was eating enough. My other dog, who is a giant breed, is enthusiastic about this food. She’s always been gassy and that hasn’t changed, but I do find that she hasn’t had constipation or diarrhea as often. Raw food can be a constant balancing act in that regard. I appreciate that I spend a LOT less time thinking about what to feed my dog and what’s coming out of her hind end. I do wish there were different protein options available in this line, but for now I feel like I can live with spending less money and time worrying about dog food. … more

Tappan changed ingredients and gave no notice.

By NewRich on Mar 6, 2021

Cedar's dog food shipment came today. He gets the 2 bags of food from the same company, but different ingredients. The cheap bag of Skoki has (without notice) changed it's ingredients. It dropped barley, and added lamb(ok) and added tomato pomace and rosemary which he cannot eat. I contacted Chewy to return this 40lb($47.24) bag of food. Looks like Cedar will now have to get only the First Mate Chicken with Blueberries in a 28.6 lb bag for $(76.64) Fuming here. It'd be nice if they warned customers.

    High quality and affordable

By Alex on Mar 23, 2021

I’ve used other dog foods by First Mate (fish and oats as well as their other grain friendly options) and the dogs did great on it but with an increasing number of dogs, I wanted something a bit more budget friendly. All 4 of our dogs are doing great on this food and I can save a little money without sacrificing quality

    Wanted to like

By Skoki on Feb 6, 2021

I really wanted to like this food. The ingredients are good, the ingredient list is shorter and everything sounds perfect. Sadly I couldn't get my dogs to eat it. They are a little bit on the picky side, but even with a topper they wouldn't eat this. I'm very sad because it checked off all the right boxes.

    Balding gone!

    By Ze1da on Dec 26, 2020

I love this dog food because my basenji mix loves it too. Hes been eating this food for over a year now and his fur has grown in the naturally thin areas as well as almost no shedding at all! I just wish I could find this food at the local stores I case chewy stops selling it.

    Great for my Rottie

By Loebean on Oct 4, 2020

I have been feeding this to my Rottie now for several months. His coat is shiny and soft. He has lots of energy and his poo is nice and firm. He enjoys the taste and looks forward to mealtime. He is also at an excellent weight. This food is not cooked at as high of temperatures as other dog foods so it retains more of the nutrients and is also a bit easier on the pocketbook. Would highly recommend.

    Good ingredients, good company

    By Fido on Apr 10, 2020 top1000Contributor

The the company that makes this food does not do cruel laboratory tests on animals and the ingredients are amazing, so that is why I decided to try this food for my dogs. No copper sulfate, menadione sodium bisulfite, or caramel color? Wow! My 5 dogs like it well enough (especially the pit bull), but unfortunately it made my female Italian Greyhound throw up twice (she possibly ate too fast), and it gives my male husky sloppy poop. For those reasons, I can't give this food 5 stars, but I still think it's good food. If my dogs did better on it, I would keep it on autobuy.
