FAQ

Has Health Extension been affected by any pet food recalls?

No, our formulas have never had a single recall.

What is the difference between “chicken” meal and “chicken by-product” meal?

Chicken meal is a high quality concentrated protein source that contains muscle meat. By law it may not contain heads, feet or intestines. Chicken by-product meal contains a variety of chicken “parts” including heads, feet and intestines.

Why do you use garlic in certain formulas?

We add a trace of garlic to our canned dog food to increase palatability. While it is a member of the onion family, garlic does not contain a meaningful amount of disulfide and will not cause a dog to become ill.

Where are Health Extension products sold in my area?

Our holistic pet products are now available at nearly 2000 independent retailers throughout the United States and parts of Canada! Simply use our Store Locator to find the most convenient location.

What is the percentage of meat in the Meaty Mix Chicken & Beef canned formulas?

Made exclusively with meat, each can contains more than 95% of Chicken and Beef, respectively.

Where are Health Extension foods made?

All Health Extension products are proudly made in the U.S.A.

I have been feeding Health Extension to my dog for years, but the last bag that I opened looked darker (or lighter) then before. Should I be concerned about feeding this to my dog?

Health Extension dog foods, cat foods and pet products are all-natural. Our foods have no added artificial colors or flavors. Colors and dyes are used to mask the natural colors which give a consistent color. We expect to see slight variation from batch to batch. This is simply a reflection of the natural ingredients we use and in no way affects the quality of the food.

What is the shelf life of Health Extension?

Health Extension dry foods have an expiration of 1 year from date of manufacture.

How should I transition my pet from a different brand over to Health Extension?

The following 5 day process provided by PetMD usually leads to positive results:* Day 1 - Mix 20% of Health Extension with 80% of the old.* Day 2 - Mix 40% of Health Extension with 60% of the old.* Day 3 - Mix 60% of Health Extension with 40% of the old.* Day 4 - Mix 80% of Health Extension with 20% of the old.* Day 5 - Feed 100% of Health Extension!

Does Health Extension offer free samples so that my pet can try it before I buy a larger bag?

While we do not have samples to send out from our corporate office, these can be obtained from a local retailer.

Health Ext Salmon Recipe is hard to beat!

    By on

We have a 6 month old German Shepherd that has been on this food since she was weaned from her mother. We got her at 10 weeks old and kept her on this formula at the recommendation of the breeder. She absolutely loves it. We did try switching her to the Health Ext Original Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe for about 6 weeks after the health concern of dogs eating grain free made the news. Although she loved it just as much as the Salmon, we noticed her stools were a lot looser. We switched her back to Salmon and her stools became firm again....much easier to clean up in the yard! We may eventually try some of the other grain free flavors but for now we are very happy with Health Ext Salmon. I've did a lot of research on different brands and although there a some other good brands out there, I did not find any that I would consider switching to since we are very pleased with the results of Health Extension. Also, Health Extension is American Made and hasn't ever had a recall on their food, plus their Customer Service Dept is very quick to respond whenever I do have questions about their food. I wish it cost less but it is comparable in price to other 4-5 star foods on the market. I highly recommend Health Extension foods for your fur baby! … more

Yet another great food from HE product line!

We just got a new rescue Chow who was poorly neglected and came to us with eye and ear infections, and bad secondary yeasty skin infection. Our other guys were on different HE Formulas, but out new little gal had some gas distress digesting those. We decided to try a different novelty protein with this Salmon recipe, and it was the best thing we had done for her. After just 3days on this new formula, she has NO more gas distress and is full of energy! Plus her coat is shiny and markedly fuller- she had allopecia patches from her skin problems, but she has bounced back no more scaly patches, itching, biting her skin and paw pads, or shaking her head and pawing at her ears. Health Extension Grain Free dog food

    By on

We switched our Emma, an 84 lb golden doodle, to the Health Extension dog food a couple of years ago. We have always fed her top of the line, vet recommended foods, but kept having issues with thin coat, etc. Since switching to the Health Extension foods, her coat has certainly improved and she couldn't be healthier. Occasionally, her breath smells better when she eats the buffalo, but we like to alternate.

    Henry loves these

I have needed small high quality treats for training. I realize this is dog food, but both dogs really love this food and welcome it as a reward. It's been nice to try out a small bag before buying a large one. My dogs are large 75-100lbs. One is under 2years and one is 12years.

If your dog has tummy issues this formula will help!! My dog loves all kinds of food but not all food loves my dog. We use to buy eagle pack and it's hard to digest for him. He loves the salmon for an added treat.

    Must Taste Incredible!!

    By on

Roxy is allergic to chicken so she’s been on a salmon/fish based diet for 2 years. We’ve fed her most of the high quality formulas available on chewy. When I Put this in her bowl she basically went nuts & devoured it right away. Looking at the ingredients it must have extra flavor with the fruits & other healthy ingredients. I’m sold on this food, she loves the duck flavor too!
