Instructions
  1. Mix Instant Ocean® with ordinary dechlorinated tap or purified water. NOTE: To prepare small quantities, use 1/2 cup of Instant Ocean per each U.S. gallon of water. Mix as directed.

  2. Stir vigorously to ensure a good mix. Although the Instant Ocean solution may be used immediately, we suggest aerating the water until it achieves oxygen/carbon dioxide equilibrium.

  3. Measure specific gravity with an Instant Ocean® Hydrometer.

Recommended Specific Gravity Range: 1.020 - 1.024 at 77°F. NOTE: 1.5 lbs of Instant Ocean is formulated to create 5 gallons of saltwater at a specific gravity of 1.022.

  1. Adjust salt level accordingly. If specific gravity is too low, add more Instant Ocean. lf too high, add more dechlorinated water.
  2. Change 20% of aquarium water every two weeks to maintain optimum water quality.

USAGE NOTE: NEVER mix salt in an aquarium containing animals.

In New Aquariums: Transfer animals to the aquarium AFTER salt is completely mixed and aerated and specific gravity has been adjusted.

FAQ

What is the proper way to mix salt water?

Always add the salt mix to the water, not the other way around. Adding water to the salt mix briefly creates a highly concentrated solution that can lead to precipitation of some ingredients. Always allow newly mixed salt water to circulate with a powerhead or airstone at least overnight before use. This allows the carbon dioxide in the aquarium water to reach equilibrium with the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which normalizes pH. It also adds oxygen.

After dissolving Instant Ocean® in purified water, my calcium and/or magnesium concentration seems lower than expected. Why?

Instant Ocean® is formulated to provide a solution with levels of calcium and magnesium found in natural seawater (NSW), assuming you use purified water to dissolve the sea salt. Tap water most often contains dissolved calcium, magnesium and other minerals that will add to the levels provided by Instant Ocean®. The specific gravity of NSW is typically 1.026 (35 parts per thousand, or ppt, salinity). When dissolved in pure water to a specific gravity of 1.026, Instant Ocean® should provide a solution that has 400 mg/L calcium ion and 1320 mg/L magnesium ion. If Instant Ocean® is dissolved to a lower specific gravity, then these concentrations (and, in fact, the concentration of every other ion) will be proportionately lower.

My Instant Ocean®/Reef Crystals® will not dissolve properly. I have a cloudy solution with sediment at the bottom of the mixing container. Why?

The most common cause of poor solubility is moisture. Some of the compounds used in sea salts are hygroscopic, meaning they readily and quickly draw moisture from their surroundings. If your sea salt has any “clumps” or hardened sections, then this is a sure sign that moisture has been introduced. Sea salt that has absorbed moisture may dissolve with the addition of aeration. The best way to avoid moisture in your sea salt is to re-seal the container immediately after use.

Does Instant Ocean® contain a dechlorinator? Does Instant Ocean® contain any ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) or other types of metal chelators?

Instant Ocean® has never contained a dechlorinator or any type of chelator. It is advisable to dechlorinate using a commercially available de-chlorinator when using tap water to dissolve Instant Ocean®.

What is the difference between Instant Ocean® Sea Salt and Reef Crystals®?

Instant Ocean® is engineered to closely match natural seawater, and Reef Crystals® is enriched to facilitate the growth of corals and other invertebrates in a reef aquarium.

I've just gotten back into this hobby after a 8 year break, but there was no doubt that IO was the salt I was going to use. As long as you use the same amount of water and and salt each time you make a batch, your Salinity levels will be consistent. The price for this amount was 30% less than at my LFS and this makes 50 gallons more! There is one draw back to this size. It comes in 1 bag in the box, and not divided into smaller amounts. So before I even open the bag, I'm going to have to invest into a 5 gallon bucket and desiccant packets - Since this amount will probably last me up to 10 months. I have a FOWLR tank and I only test for the basic parameters, so I don't know how IO compares to I've just gotten back into this hobby after a 8 year break, but there was no doubt that IO was the salt I was going to use. But i have used other brands and just mixing them was always a hassle and i rarely got 2 batches to come out the same. With IO i don't have that hassle. As long as I'm consistent, my test results will be too. … more

  • Took a bit more...

    By on

Took a bit more salt than the directions stated, but we have well water with literally no salt in it. As long as you take it slow (and I premixed it in a pitcher of aquarium water before pouring it in the tank a bit at a time) and check your gravity throughout you’ll be fine. We also gave it several days to settle, and once it did it hasn’t spiked or declined at all since.

  • Great stuff!

    By on

I got this stuff to mix salt water for my hermit crabs. It is so much BETTER than buying the bottled salt water in the hermit crab isle.. you will save money! The grains of salt are very fine and dissolve quickly. I was a little skeptical so I did a taste test and it's true to it's name.. probably the closest you can get to ocean water. I wish the bags were resealable but I understand why that's not a feature.

  • Don't buy small box size, Rock Hard!

    By on

I have purchased the small box of salt several times, and it is great. Then I got a box that was rock-hard & I used a hammer & chisel to break it apart. I thought it was a fluke. The next box I bought was also rock-hard. I contacted Chewy and they immediately sent me another box. That was rock-hard. I emailed and they send me another. Rock hard. I have now asked for a refund. Don't order the small box until they can figure out how to fix this.
