how do they make this safe from bacteria and viruses?

Answer by ChewyJun 23, 2025
Instinct uses High Pressure Processing (also known as HPP or Cold Pressure) on all of their frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes to ensure they are free from pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria. This is the same process used for human foods like cold-pressed juices and guacamole. They also extensively test every batch for safety before it leaves their facilities. In addition, Instinct carries a Safe Quality Food (SQF) Food Safety certification as well as a SQF Quality certification. SQF is a rigorous and credible food safety and quality auditing program that is recognized by retailers, brand owners, and food service providers world-wide.

I’m really glad I gave this dog food a chance. My daughter feeds this to her dogs and encouraged me to give it a try. When I first set Diesel’s bowl in front of him, he sniffed and tried to bury it with his blanket. The next time I gave some to him he ate til it was gone. Now after a couple of weeks he is still loving it. I purchased the Alaskan Pollock this time. Thank yo Chevy

Low Fat, High Quality

My dogs beg for this. I love that it's low calorie so that I can feed them more at each feeding. I wasn't thrilled with the way it arrived... barely frozen...but

My dogs beg for this. I love that it's low calorie so that I can feed them more at each feeding. I wasn't thrilled with the way it arrived... barely frozen...but there was a holiday delay between the order and the delivery. Keep this in mind when ordering. It's also low in fat , which I think will help one of my dogs who has gastrointestinal issues.

Excellent food

Dog loves it. Very very good quality. My dog gets different flavors/meats all the time, I rotate them and her shedding is minimal! She was a big big shedder before

Dog loves it. Very very good quality. My dog gets different flavors/meats all the time, I rotate them and her shedding is minimal! She was a big big shedder before but after 3-4 mos on this her shedding is down a to almost nothing. Food makes a HUGE difference! Rotating foods within same brand there should be no diarrhea. If you switch brands to rotate different nutrients into your pet’s diet do it slowly over 7-10 days or add pumpkin or another stool firmer bought at Chewy to diet, each meal for 7 days and wean off the stool firmer after 7 days, over a few days. Good to rotate brands and meats bc ea brand and meat has different nutrients. Using pumpkin, I use 3 large tablespoons to dog over 60 lbs ea meal until her belly seems adjusted to new brand if I have to switch brands all at once.

Took too much effort to get shepherd to eat this

I was surprised and disappointed our shepherd wasn't at all enthusiastic about the Alaskan Pollock raw bites since she eats so many varieties of fish without issue

I was surprised and disappointed our shepherd wasn't at all enthusiastic about the Alaskan Pollock raw bites since she eats so many varieties of fish without issue. Took too much effort to get her to eat this, tried warming it, added fish oil, made it more gravy like, added toppers, etc., and still had some wasted meals I had to throw out. Couldn't even get any of our three cats to help out by eating it. Good brand, but wouldn't buy the Pollock again.

Dogs like it

My dogs all like this and gobble it right up, even straight from the freezer. I feel like I'm feeding them something healthy and mix it in with their kibble.

Pup didn’t like

I liked the ingredients listed and wanted to try something other than dry kibble for my bulldog. My little girl is not usually a fussy eater but she didn’t like

I liked the ingredients listed and wanted to try something other than dry kibble for my bulldog. My little girl is not usually a fussy eater but she didn’t like it. She can’t eat it when frozen, and it got way too mushy when it thawed. I tried mixing it with dry kibble, she still didn’t want it, ultimately I had to throw away the bowl of food a couple of times because she just didn’t care to eat it. I’ll try a different form of fresh food. I will say the way the frozen food was packaged was excellent, the food was still quite frozen when I took the bag out of the shipping box.

My pup isn’t a big fan

It arrived with plenty of dry ice still in the box. My dog liked it once, and only once. Idk, sadly I’m throwing more out than she’s eaten, and cancelled the subscription

Won’t Eat

My dog won’t touch it. Even my cats won’t. Total waste of money. Had to throw it all out.
