Montmorillonite Clay is listed as the 6th ingredient, is this: Terramin Calcium-Montmorillonite clay? (the good stuff) or drilling mud-Montmorillonite Clay? (bad stuff)?
Answer by ChewyOct 17, 2018
Montmorillonite Clay is an ingredient in all of Instinct's food. They use Montmorillonite Clay (Hydrated Sodium Calcium Aluminosilicate) sourced from deposits in southern Utah. If you look at the chemical name for Montmorillonite Clay, you will see both sodium and calcium right at start of the chemical formula. If the given clay has a larger percentage of sodium than calcium, it is often shortened in descriptions to Sodium Montmorillonite. If the given clay has a larger percentage of calcium than sodium, it is often shortened in descriptions to Calcium Montmorillonite. The source of the natural clay that is used in their products is higher in calcium than sodium and is described as “Calcium Montmorillonite” but Instinct elects to simply describe it as Montmorillonite Clay. Montmorillonite Clay is approved by AAFCO for use as an anticaking processing aid to adsorb excess moisture and to help keep the food from clumping. Nature's Variety is committed to using high quality, safe ingredients. Their vendor tests the Montmorillonite Clay used in the diets for dioxins and it is guaranteed dioxin-free.

Does Instinct by Natures Variety use any ingriedients from China?
Answer by ChewyJul 21, 2017
Nature's variety will source their high-quality ingredients within the United States depending on availability. If ingredients have to be sourced elsewhere they'll be looking at New Zealand (Venison and Lamb), Europe (Rabbit), China (Vitamin Pack) and Scandinavia (Vitamin Pack).

Is there any ingredients in this dog food that comes from China? Is the fish wild or farmed? What protein percentage is derived from just fish? What is the Chondroitin and Glucosamine content in mg?
Answer by ChewyAug 02, 2021
Whenever wild-caught salmon is available, it is sourced for this diet. When not available, farm-raised Salmon from the Pacific Northwest is used to ensure the recipe is still available.Glucosamine and chondroitin are in our natural ingredients; however, instinct does not guarantee the levels except in Instinct Senior and Small Breed dog kibble formulas. 77%  of protein comes from animals and 23 % comes from vegetables and other plants.

Does this contain Taurine? For heart health?
Answer by ChewyAug 24, 2020
Taurine is found naturally within meat, with the level varying depending on the type of meat.

great food, all flavors agree with my pups

We've been feeding our pups Instinct Limited Turkey for years now. we recently had to order a different flavor, (salmon) due to the Turkey being out of stock. I was worried it would affect their digestion but it was not an issue. Going forward we will look to try their other flavors in order to give our pups a broader diet!

Great it is a very good product

My Chow Loved it. He has a very sensitive stomach and usually eats the lamb.for many years. The lamb was not available so I tried the salmon and the turkey and he loved both and they agreed with him. The different flavors helped his appetite also.

Supply frustration

I know that supply chain problems are in every branch of the economy, including pet food. It is very frustrating to have a dog food that I have been feeding my Lab all of a sudden is not available. It also happened with Tylee’s dehydrated beef patties. Just venting, as I know your hands are tied.

so far so good

My dog has serious allergies that affect his skin - so far I haven't found a food that doesn't eventually make him itch pretty badly. After half a 10 lb. bag of Instinct Limited Ingredient kibble, he's doing well. We'll see how long this lasts...!

great food my dog loves it!

My 10 year old shepherd has developed chronic yeast infections and other issues. I was hesitant to put him on grain free foods but researched this is one of the recommended brands for yeast infections. My dog loves this food, clears his bowl for every meal, and while his yeast infection has not entirely cleared up because he fights the other treatments needed we have noticed he has appeared more comfortable since switching him.

Highly reccomend

This is perfect for my Bernese mountain dog. Like a lot of berners she can’t have chicken. This food is the only food she can digest without issues

Instinct is great!

I absolutely love Instinct brand foods. My German Shepherd is a mess of allergies, he basically falls apart no matter what I feed him but once I started feeding him Instinct he started doing better than he has on any other foods I’ve tried for him. I did have him on the Instinct Original Salmon but after a while decided to switch to the limited ingredient because I felt like it would help with his issues even more. It’s only been 2 weeks so far on the LID but it’s been going well. He is a hard keeper, and doesn’t get too skinny on Instinct, his coat is also nice and shiny and soft.

Wonder why they it instinct?

I recently switched to Instinct from Canidae Salmon formula. I needed something for the taste, she gets bored time to time. But more importantly, my pity has food allergies. And guess what? This food, she both loved and helped with her allergy condition. So if your looking for hypoallergenic dog food, you can’t go wrong with Instinct. It has less “stuff” or unneeded ingredients than other limited ingredient dog foods out there. And more of the natural ingredients that for a kibble, will satisfy you and your furry friend. My dog loved it—more salmon for her tummy! I must mention, that I also mix her kibble with salmon can-food. This time I will try some rabbit with Instinct Salmon limited ingredient. We will see how that goes!
