Does Nature's Variety source any of their ingredients from China?
Answer by ChewyApr 06, 2018
Nature's Variety is committed to using high quality, safe ingredients from government-inspected facilities. The natural ingredients are continuously inspected for quality and tested for analytical compliance before being accepted at their facilities. They do not source any of the meat or poultry from China. All of the poultry and pork come from the U.S., the beef is from the U.S. and New Zealand, lamb is from the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, venison is imported from Australia and New Zealand, and the rabbit is imported from France and Italy. They are very stringent in their sourcing standards and prioritize building close relationships with the vendors. The only ingredient that may come from China, depending on the sourcing availability elsewhere, are the vitamins and minerals.

It looks like Nature's Variety has changed its packaging to include the motto "The Raw Brand." Is this cat meat raw now? It's not at all clear.
Answer by ChewyDec 24, 2017
The meat is not raw in the food, the Raw Brand is just the motto stating their food is all natural.

Can you give the limited ingredient food to kittens?

Formula has changed for the worse. Canola Oil added, No longer made in the USA.

We have been feeding our cats this food for 2 years now and it met all of our needs. Unfortunately, the most recent shipment I opened, it was immediately clear that the food is a completely different formula. The can is heavier and harder to open and the food is much more gelatinous and a much denser pate. The rim of the can's interior is coated with a oily residue. Initially, I was concerned we got a bad batch, then I reviewed the Ingredients list on the can to see if something had changed and was so dismayed to see that Canola Oil is now the 6th ingredient (it was not even in the ingredients previously). Additionally, this food used to be Made in the USA and advertised as such. The cans now read "Product of Thailand". Overall, Instinct made some poor choices here to cut cost and unfortunately I have cancelled my AutoShip and will be finding a new food.

No longer Made in USA...?

I have been buying this limited ingredient wet cat food for years--upon receiving the order, I noticed that the design of the can changed (it's a little harder to open), but I didn't think much of it. Today, I just happened to notice that this particular food is now 'Made in Thailand'. One of the reasons I originally chose this brand was because it was 'Made in USA'. That no longer seems to be the case. What happened? Time to move on--I will be seeking out a different brand for my cat.

My cat has been eating Instinct Limited Ingredient for several years. What a disappointment to open the new case and find that it's now from Thailand and is a different formula and texture. I had no choice but to feed it to my cat this evening but I will donate the rest of it to the local shelter and have canceled my autoship. Cats can have digestive upsets when food ingredients change. Not cool, Instinct.

Disappointed Cats

What has happened? Our cats (and we) loved this Limited Ingredient Diet Turkey. The smell, the taste, the texture, have all changed, and our cats will no longer eat this food. It's just a waste to buy and feed it, as it all goes down the drain. We will not be ordering this anymore. Now on to the seemingly endless search for edible turkey for our cats.

change in food?! what the heck?!

I’m sooooo annoyed. It’s so difficult to get food for my cat. He had a limited diet and all of a sudden his FOOD CHANGED. WHY?! I need to call chewy and call Instinct. THIS IS NOT OKAY. Old is on the left and new is on the right. Luckily he will still eat it but I’m worried now what he is even eating. It hardly looks like real Turkey or limited ingredients….

Cats won’t eat anymore

My two senior boys have been eating this food (along with the chicken pate) for several years, and my new 1 year old for the past year. And they always loved it and ate it all. However, Instinct recently changed the recipe for their cat foods (the chicken recipe changed too). The food has a weird thick gravy now that sticks to the inside of the can and leaves a hard residue. Now there is a weird residue left in the cans that will not come out. I tried feeding the new recipe food to my cats but all steadfastly refused to eat it. So now I need to find a new turkey substitute pate from another brand. I will be seeing if I can get a refund for this food as I spent a lot of $$ on it. (Cans with new recipe have blue writing on lids.)

New formula uses guar gum

I have been feeding my cats Instinct food for several years. One of the things I most liked about it is that it didn’t contain any gums. However, the formula has changed and guar gum has replaced the clay. My cats don’t care for it. None of my cats have ever eaten food containing guar gum and I’m very concerned that nothing was posted in the description of this product regarding a formula change. I would have rated this product 5 stars prior to the formula change. The company is also now manufacturing their food in Thailand.

Maow Maow’s Mom

My last case of food has changed. Let me break it down. 1. Can won’t open. The tab bends and the doesn’t seperate to pull it back and off. Glad I have my can opener. 2. One the lid was off it stunk to high end. 3. Color is a pale grayish color. No gravy or oil. 4. Tried using my cat spoon and it is so gummy you can’t even stir it up. Imagine sticky dough all over your hands. I have meds I put on his food. Now he won’t even touch it. You can’t even get all of the product out of the metal can. You can’t even get what is on the spoon without using your finger. I called Chewy and through the complaints they started a ticket. Call them cuz they will try some reimbursement. I called Instinct and was told no letters were sent to Chewy of all the changes. One by one we are all coming forward. Please call Instinct directly so that they are aware of the problem.

Quality Has Declined

What happened to this food? It used to be the best - looked fresh, with peas - now it’s gray and does not look fresh. This is expensive food but I purchased it for my cat with an extremely sensitive digestive system. Food changes are not good. Please go back to the original formula! I don’t recommend the new one at all.

Ruined after Recipe Change

The recent change in recipe completely ruined this food. It is now a pale grey, hard, clump that smells and looks artificial. My cats loved this food prior to the change but now won't even go near it. They actually walk wide around the bowl just to limit how long they have to smell it. When a company produces a food product that is intended for cats with gastric and intestinal issues, any change should be very small and tested thoroughly. This change was clearly one that will simply make the company more money. I can appreciate that to an extent, you obviously have to make money, but this product is now completely ruined and where I used to recommend Instinct, I will now only worn people to stay away. DO. NOT. BUY. And Chewy should even remove this food from their listing as this cannot possibly be healthy.
