Dogs goes bonkers for this grub

By Rina on Jan 9, 2022

I bought this bag on a whim, thinking about the sustainability of vertebrate vs invertebrate proteins. I didn't know I'd have to put a new latch on the pantry door to keep the dog from breaking in to attack her food barrel. She treats this dog food as if it were a high priced treat, and is way more excited for her meals than she ever was! I don't feed it to her straight, but mix it in with her regular kibble, and keep some handy for treats. I don't know what the magic ingredient is, but the dog approves!

Pricey, but they liked it - wish it had higher protein levels

    By Mamafirebird on Dec 22, 2021 top100Contributor

Both of my Australian Shepherds found Good Grub kibbles very tasty additions to our food rotations. In the past, I’ve experimented with adding straight, dried soldier fly larvae ( purchased to feed outdoor insect eating birds like Bluebirds and Wrens) as a topping to other kibbles, and they liked the crunchy bits, so this was worth a try. My only 2 issues: price first! Wow, this stuff is more expensive than Acana! I bought a small bag, to see how my dogs liked it (they did), and also purchased small bags of the related dog cookies (currently inside their Christmas stockings) to give it a try. I applaud the sustainability of this approach, as insect fats and proteins get metabolized the same Both of my Australian Shepherds found Good Grub kibbles very tasty additions to our food rotations. I applaud the sustainability of this approach, as insect fats and proteins get metabolized the same way as those of either plant or animal origins. However, my second concern is the relatively low protein levels in the formulation. My dogs are very active, working dogs and one of my biggest challenges has always been finding foods with much higher than typical protein and fat levels, because they burn everything off and start to lose weight, condition, and stamina when fed lower protein foods. (It irks me a dog food can be called “high protein” when the analysis says 24% - inevitably meaning the food is more than 50% carbohydrates.). I will probably keep a small bag on hand to use for treat rewards and special toppers to raw meals - kind of like Lucky Charms marshmallow treats. … more

    Boys love it

By Deborah on Nov 26, 2021

Our two Havanese dogs - brothers who are now almost 15 - have absolutely thrived on Jiminy's food! I feed them both the Good Grub and Cricket kibble, mixed with some of The Honest Kitchen kibble (because they love poultry!), along with 1/4 hard-boiled egg and some chopped greens. They are at their optimal weight, happy, energetic boys with these products! Teddy was diagnosed with Cushings disease earlier this year. Since I changed his diet he has improved so much! Can't say enough about it. Will continue to purchase! Highly recommend!!!

    Dustiness gives me pause

By Dogs on Nov 8, 2021

It's a neat concept that my dogs could impact the earth less by eating less meat, so I bought a 10 lbs bag. Both my dogs loved the food at first. After a couple of weeks one of my dogs began refusing to eat it. Around this time the food became very dusty--- even whole kibble scooped carefully breaks and turns into dust when it hits the bowl. So, maybe the flavor also changed? I wouldn't buy this again, because (1) I'm not sure about the dust, and (2) I use kibble as treats when on walks, and this is just too fragile. I might be willing to try a bag of the cricket food, in case it's better.

    Good Price for Ethically-Minded Brand

By Emily on Oct 27, 2021

When we got our pup, one of our big concerns was that the food we feed him be healthy for him but also responsibly sourced as we are both very sustainability-minded. I have compared all of the "ethical" and "sustainable" brands, and this one comes out on par or cheaper than many, and our pup loves it. As a vegan, I really appreciate that this better aligns with my values while meeting scientific standards for my pup's needs. We feed 50/50 with another sustainable (but more traditional ingredients) brand, and our pup's coat glistens.

    both dogs LOVE it

By marco on Oct 25, 2021

Insane price but it is very unique and I assume (hope) price will eventually come down when this is more mass produced. Tried maybe 10 different dry dog foods over the years and both dogs like this the best. They devour it. The low environmental impact is also a big deal for me. Price is the only reason I was hesitant to give it 5 stars.

    Wally loves it

By Lora on Oct 7, 2021

I was happy to find an insect-based dog food on Chewy. Our (human) family is vegetarian, so it's nice to be able to feed our dog a diet appropriate for a carnivore that is more in line with our values. Our dog seems to love it - he finishes the bowl and licks it clean. I'm hoping prices on this product will drop as it becomes more popular.

    Insect protein

By Babs on Jun 29, 2021

I’m a huge fan of both the Good Grub and Cricket Crave. Roo stopped scratching almost immediately after starting the Cricket Crave, and has stopped requiring her monthly Cytopoint injection and appoquel tablets. I tell everyone about it.

The only food for my allergic dog

By Stephanie on Apr 5, 2021

I feed raw to my dog because she scratch a lot and feeding her raw food has reduced her scratching tremendously. I train her a lot though and raw is not practical when I train her using her food portion (or when I want to bring a few treats on walks). This is the only food (and the cricket crave) that I can give to her that won't make her scratch. She goes CRAZY for it lol. I really love the shape of the food too.

Good but why 3xs more expensive?

By Williheums on Mar 20, 2021

So the ads for this food touts saving the planet by saving a half a milion gallons of water etc etc etc. So we bought the 3.5 lb bag to try. They ate it. Shrug. But this food is literally 3xs more expensive than conventional chicken based food and it also doesn't come in a recyclable package. I mean? If you're ads want to walk the walk and save the planet with 'cheaper' protein rich bugs, then do it! But 10lb bag at $45 vs my 30lb bag of any other decent healthy dog food at $45? Not exactly "affordable" considering you're spending less in resources with a cheaper alternative protein? How do you justify your cost?
