Ordered this for the first time and its completely different than the layer pellets we've used in the past. This isn't like kibbled feed, its is grain and veggies and is the real deal not highly processed, compressed stuff. Costs a little more but the birds seem to really like it. Mixed with layer pellets one time and since then they have been feeding on this by itself. Our hens are just reaching laying age and the eggs are outstanding.
I started by using this as a scratch treat. As I was looking for an additional option for my chickens I realized it is a straight feed. Here in the Texas heat the feed I was using was to "hot" for them and they were going off the feed. I now use Kalmbach and crumbles mixed. It can be used on it's own but it is a little pricey. That is the only reason for the 4 star. They love it and are now producing again.
I have 12 laying hens. They were NOT a fan of this feed. At all. They picked out a few things they liked and wasted the rest. I have never had that problem. Egg production dropped down to 3-6 per day!! Very disappointed and would NOT recommend.
I heard about this feed from Cog Hill Farms on YouTube! As soon as it was delivered I gave some to the girls, who had already been fed their regular feed, they ate the Kalmbach for over an hour! Totally ignoring their old feed! When comparing the ingredients, the Kalmbach is far superior to the Nutrena so we will definitely be ordering more!
My hens love the kalmbach henhouse thats all i feed my flock is kalmbach feed but the henhouse is the best and its only like $5 more. With the henhouse they produce excellent eggs the yolks are very dark orange and stand up high and the whites are not runny. They produce good eggs on all the kalmbach feed but have the best eggs on the henhouse. Plus its a feed that you can see whats in it and when you open it it smells good....if you want some great eggs spend few bucks extra and get the henhouse you wont regreat it
My chickens go wild for this feed. First they pick through for their favorite bits and graze on the rest later. I have noticed their egg yolks have gotten a much darker orange since switching to this food. Happy hens = great eggs!
Overall, this product is fine. However I felt a little misled as I thought this was pretty much all grain type feed. I was looking to get away from the pellet feed bc I ferment for my chickens to save money. This has some pellets in it, and the pellets turn to mush, which is why I was trying to avoid pellets. I'm not completely disappointed, I like the feed, overall. But it has been so hard to find something without any kind of pellets (for a reasonable price!)
I have three hens (leghorns) and a rooster. They all enjoy this feed. I get great egg production and they seem very happy. One of the hens started to get egg bound pretty frequently, about once every two or three weeks. So I started supplementing in some oyster shell in with the feed. Hasn’t happened since.
I mixed this feed with my other type that I usually feed to my hens and all they want to do is scratch away all the other stuff for this. I would not recommend mixing this with pellet food or they will make a mess getting to the sunflower seed, bird seed, and everything else that is in it.
There must be grains in this that my chickens don’t like. My run has a lot of spilled and leftover feed which I didn’t have previously. I’ll be canceling my subscription.
