I absolutely love this feed! It has “whole” grains, peas, and other ingredients that just make it “look” good! I know that really shouldn’t matter BUT it seems to be as nutritional as some pellet feeds with more natural variety and appeal! My favorite without going broke over my chicken kids!
My 4 hens seemed bored with their old layer crumbles so I thought I'd spice things up with a different type of feed. They were excited and eagerly picked through the new feed....but later I saw that they ate everything EXCEPT the pellets & peas. This happens every day now....they eagerly eat all the grains and sunflowers seeds, but not the pellets. Not wanting to waste anything, I left the scraps for the squirrels and crows and other wild birds. They won't eat it either! So now the leftovers get tossed in the compost bin. I wish my hens weren't so picky, and I envy those whose birds eat the whole product.
Ordered 2 bags of chicken feed and they are completely mouldy inside. All stuck in a giant blob of mold. I have been using Kalmbach feed for years and this is my first time with this much feed loss straight out of the bag. Its devastating!
I wouldn't buy this again because it's expensive and they make a huge mess of it...I bought this to boost their health through the winter, but that will be my last bag because they pick through everything to try and find what they like and kick all the rest out of the feeder..I wind up scraping up the kicked out bits and putting it in the compost. Doesn't seem worth it to be buying an expensive bag to basically put most of it in the compost..
This is a beautiful mixture of various grains, small pellets, and split peas. It isn’t like anything I’ve ever fed to my chickens. I usually feed Kalmbach layer pellets to my flock with cracked corn as a treat. I recently switched to chick starter because I had three hens with broods of chicks in my flock. When it came time to return to layer food I purchased this product on a whim to see how they liked it. Since this is pricy, I also purchased layer crumbles (they preferred chick crumbles to layer pellets) and mixed the two bags together to stretch the Reserve Premium. They love this. However, they tend to make a huge mess under the feeder. Apparently there is something they want in the mix more than the crumbles! They eventually clean up most of the mess. They free range along with this food and I feel they get a good variety in their diet. Their eggs look healthy with strong shells and the whole flock appears to be thriving.
I love the new feed...my chickens love it and can't wait to be feed. I can see the quality...all the different ingredients
Thanks, you have spoiled my chickens with Hen House Reserve No ordinary 18% protein pellets for my ten hens, they want the good stuff!!!!
I have been feeding this to my girls for almost 3 years. They produce more eggs on this brand than any of the others I’ve tried. It smells good and they go crazy when they see me coming out with it
My Peacock loves this! He's 17 years old and very picky, but he gobbled this up like candy
The girls love this product all except the small pellets. They pick around those. They are very healthy and shiny.
