Can this be fed to the rooster or do I have to feed separately?

Answer by ChewyApr 17, 2018
If you have roosters in your flock, they won't touch the calcium, nor will non-laying hens, which is why it should always be fed free-choice not mixed into the feed so each bird can eat as little or as much as they want. Roosters can eat layer feed once they reach 18 weeks old despite the higher calcium levels, as long as you're not mixing in the additional calcium into the feed.

Three of my pullets died from starvation while eating this food. They always ate great so I didn’t even know anything was wrong until they became extremely lethargic. I took one to the vet and she said she was extremely emaciated and likely died from hypoglycemia. I DO NOT recommend feeding this food.

Chickens feed

I ordered a grain layer mix last and my chickens pecked out what they didn’t want and only ate what they did want. This layer pellet seems to be lasting much longer

My entire flock thinks it’s great

If I put 5 bowls of different brands of pellets they would go to this one!

I have 8 chickens and in less than a month all my hens lost significant weight and my buff orpington is very vitamin e deficient. I am not a newbie chicken owner. I've been having chickens nearly ten years. My flock is normally extremely healthy. Our buff orpington is currently in the house recovering slowly. I still have some feed left and will be throwing it away. It is complete garbage.

If I could go back, I wouldn’t have purchased this. It’s funny because chickens can’t taste and my birds are struggling with eating it let alone going through the bags. Unfortunately for me, I dumped both bags into our feed bin so unless I toss it to the rats, (but I don’t want my money wasted further), so I’ll offer it to my chickens until we are done. I am already working on finding another food.

Been feeding this to my Girlz (18 hens) for about 4-5 years, seemingly, no complaints from them... people complained about generic white bags in the reviews-- my order seems to have always come in the green bag- and my neighbor up-cycles them and makes reusable shopping bags out of them for the food pantry; I had one bag of feed that was inadvertently left in our garage for a couple of weeks - and upon opening it, it was rancid. clumpy and moldy. but that may have been a result of my storage; though it was dry- I cut my losses, because I can't say if it arrived that way.- Chewy will replace any moldy bags- if you speak to them, I am sure. . I try to buy locally, this food is less expensive than what is available at the local feed store so I split my purchases between them...

I switched to this feed because it was organic and a good price. Came in an unmarked white bag..hm ok..the omega 3s now have my brown eggs smelling fishy. So skip if you don’t want fishy smelling brown eggs (I looked it up post smelly eggs, common thing for brown egg chickens and omega 3) back to our old feed we go.
