About This Item

Details

  • Strengthens weak, worn and cracked hooves by improving the molecular structure of the horn itself.
  • Formulated to stay on in the field, this product is equally effective in wet and dry conditions.
  • Prevents the horn from taking in excess moisture, providing resistance to softening and weakening in wet conditions that can cause shoe loss and abscesses.
  • Keratex Hoof Hardener is not an oil or resin layer and does not seal the hoof—it helps maintain proper moisture balance and allows the hoof to breathe naturally.
  • Should also be applied to the sole of the hoof to prevent bruising.

We purchased a Thoroughbred in the spring. He was losing shoes every week in every situation. The farrier recommended applying iodine after picking the hoofs. Then after that dries using this hoof hardener as the bottle recommends. He also recommended adding biotin to his feed. After about three weeks the situation improved. And after two months he has not lost a shoe between his 5 week reshoe schedule. I'm knocking on my head for luck right now. So I'm not sure exactly what part of this made the difference but for sure it got better.

Best for sensitive soles after trim

This is a fantastic product. I have a barefoot horse that occasionally gets sensitive after a trim, especially when walking on rocky ground. Keratex quickly helps the soles to harden and horse is less sensitive. also helps make the hoof walls less likely to crack.

Only thing that really worked!

My new horse Elroy arrived with paper thin soles! I put him in boots to protect his very sore and vulnerable feet, however, the boots kept his soles moist and not hardening which led to them actually perforating! Dangerous!!! I bought Keratex right away (which in hindsight would be my FIRST purchase!) and in just one week I see a huge difference! His soles are staying dryer and are beginning to harden. I also started using thin "maxi pads" to line his boots and absorb the dampness that occurs. I would recommend Keratex as a first go to for any horse with sore feet/thin/weak soles. I'm hoping for continued healing and protection for my boy!

Difficult to Use and Potentially Dangerous

First, I would like to say Chewy has the best Customer Service ever. I purchased Keratex for the first time because Durasole was out of stock. When the product arrived, I read all the small print on the label indicating this product can be very dangerous to use. The use of gloves, eye protection, and warnings not to inhale the vapors were indicated. There was also a warning that this product can cause cancer and genetic defects along with skin and eye irritation warnings. Additionally, even though this is a product designed to be brushed over the sole of the foot, there was a warning not to get any in the frog. None of this information was listed on the Chewy website. I would not have purchased this product if it had been. Finally, Keratex is the consistency on water. It comes in a small plastic bottle with a wide mouth top and a small brush. I poured a small amount into a smaller container to take into the stall. People who are more coordinated than I am might be able to mange better, but I was unable to hold up my horse’s foot, clean it out, brush any debris off, and then reach for the small brush, put the brush into the container of the product to transfer the water-like consistency over to the sole of the hoof, all the while worrying about whether the product would drip onto the frog. If Keratex was packaged in some type of applicator bottle, it might be easier to use. However, there is still the serious concern that it is meant to be spread on the sole of the horse hoof, but not on the frog. I am not comfortable using a product that has so many dire warnings about having dangerous vapors and being a potent cause of cancer and genetic defects. I do not recommend this product. I asked for and was given a reimbursement for the Keratex. Thank you, Chewy.

My farriers have all recommended this for my horse

I have been using Keratex on my horse for years. It is the best to keep their hooves tough. It also helps with the soles of their feet. Easy to use.
