Mango has residual separation anxiety that makes her very "excited" when I return home. So I spread some peanut butter on the lick mat and give it to her when I release her from her crate. This distracts her from the fact that I just returned and calms her down. Great tool for this aspect of training.

OK if I could take it away but when I left it with her (30 lb energetic licker), she bit off most of the little nubs in the center. Luckily left them around on the floor (and so small would have passed right through her anyway) but then wasn't useable (she could lick stuff right off). So this one didn't work for us.

I've tried a couple different lick mats, and the stack in the cupboard includes two of these green "classic soother" mats from LickiMat. They're always top of the pile because they hold wet food very nicely and are the easiest of her lick mats to clean afterward as someone who doesn't own a dishwasher (I use a brush with silicone bristles and it's really not difficult once you get the hang of it). It's not an especially big mat so if you were trying to feed a full meal to a large dog off of it you might run into problems, but it works very well for giving my dog a couple tablespoons of wet food to help her settle and self-soothe with some intensive licking.

Likky mats have been a staple since our frenchie was a puppy. They are durable and we love the flat ones. He had some anxiety as a puppy and was destructive because he’s our adventure dog and he was bored if we weren’t always going somewhere like the beach or the park, etc. Between the likky mat and puzzle toys he is stimulated and occupied.
