Is there a trick to get these to not leak?

This little drip is the first release of water and is created as your water bottle forms a new vacuum seal. In order for a vacuum to form within the sealed water bottle, the air space and water volume need to equalize. This little release of water is the after effect of this equalization as the pressure stabilizes, and is perfectly normal. A single droplet at the end of the drinking tube is not a sign of a leaking water bottle. To help the vacuum-seal establish when the water bottle is first filled and mounted, tap the ball bearing several times with your fingertip. This releases small amounts of water and speeds up the equalization of the vacuum pressure.

What size bottle would you recommend for two female rats?

An average-sized rat should drink about 2 ounces of water per day. The 6 ounce bottle would be suitable for use with 2 rats, if refilled daily.

is this good to use with Guinea pigs?

This bottle is great for mice, gerbils, hamsters and ferrets, as well as small birds including cockatiels, conures and lovebirds. For other small animals we'd recommend the Lixit Chew Proof Glass Small Animal Water Bottle.

Can this product be used for a small Maltese puppy (2-4 lb.)

This product is intended for even smaller animals and may not suit the needs of your puppy, However, Lixit does offer water bottles specifically made for dogs. such as the Lixit Small Dog Water Bottle and Lixit Deluxe Glass Pet Water Bottle.

Generally I like using glass water bottles more than plastic ones as they seem easier to keep clean. But of course, glass is heavier and since I bought the 26oz size, it is definitely heavy when filled with water. On the other hand, it is more convenient to use a bigger bottle since my guinea pigs drink a lot of water. I don't like the V-shaped bottle holder as I don't think it's very sturdy, so I've added extra reinforcement to keep the bottle attached to the cage more securely. Also, the nozzle cap that I received is plastic rather than metal, so be aware in case your guinea pigs like to chew everything (some of mine do). From what I've seen, the bottle does not leak on its own. However, with the way that my guinea pigs drink water (using their teeth to push the ball in rather than using their tongues), water does leak out every time they drink. To keep the cage floor from getting damp, I put a small dish under the bottle and pour it out daily. If/when I need another water bottle, I would buy either this one was the smaller 12oz size.

Sturdy on crate

Leaky

Bought this for my chinchilla since I've noticed he chews on the plastic lid on his current bottle. Couldn't even put this in his cage the sipper leaks so badly
