What is compounding?
Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.
Why do some pets need compounded drugs?
Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:
- Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
- Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
- Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.
Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

Not for my cat
Smokey needs to take anti-hyperthyroid medication twice a day and we started with pills. Because he is EXTREMELY finicky, trying to persuade him to take the pills voluntarily, even in pill pockets, was not an option; we had to go through the whole head back - lower jaw down (gently!) - pill popped in - check that it's swallowed (sometimes yes, sometimes no). We were hoping that flavored liquid would be easier, and we got the strongest prescription so there would be the least amount of liquid for Smokey to have to swallow, and decided to try the one flavor (chicken) he might like. And he absolutely HATES it, even more - MUCH more - than taking the pills. The first couple of times we tried the liquid he couldn't get the taste out of his mouth fast enough, thrashing his tail and spitting, and stormed away, not to be seen for the rest of the day. Now that we've gone back to the pills, he's still not happy with the process and complains a bit, but at least now he's willing to be friends again very soon afterwards. (BTW, just to be clear, we did syringe the liquid into his cheek pocket next to his teeth, and as far back as possible to try to avoid the front of his tongue.) I'm sure there are some cats that wouldn't mind this, but my cat absolutely cannot stand it, so I just can't recommend it.
Fast shipping
I like that this compounded liquid is available and ready to ship. My cat has been doing great on it for two years. One thing I would change is the bottle size or length of the dropper. With the product only filling half the bottle, the dropper does not fill unless you tilt the bottle and then it makes it difficult to fill the dropper sufficiently.
My cat loves this
Was using a methimazole pill, then another liquid from a different pharmacy, but their bottle leaked. Decided to try Chewy and 1. it's cheaper 2. the bottle is great -no leaks, easy to dispense and 3. my cat really loves the taste! I've been able to just mix it in his food (per our vet's instructions) or give it to him straight from the syringe. Definitely sticking with Chewy on this product.
1st time using Chewy
Just time ever ordering on Chewy. The ordering process was easy and fast was FAST! Overall pleased except stubborn old cat doesn’t approve of the flavor of the medicine. We used to use a different compounding pharmacy same flavor of this medicine and she would eat it fine with her food. This one she won’t take willingly. Could just be the cat though just wish she would take it easily like her other medicine.
Great service
Received prescription in about 6 days. No problems except for the syringe that came with the bottle of medication. The plunger works very hard when going up or down in the syringe. The rubber tip keeps coming off from the plunger and gets stuck in the syringe.
Too difficult to medicate my cat
The solution is so thick and oily, it is difficult to push out of the syringe.
Happy Kitty
First time ordering prescription and Chewy did an outstanding job. Will definitely be back. Thanks.
