Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Picky Cat will eat it
By Beee on Feb 28, 2021
BW is has renal issues and we have tried several brands of the prescription food. He would only eat a bite or 2. He will eat more of this. He really liked it at first and has slowed his enthusiasm some, but he will eat it. I hope he keeps eating it at least for a while. It is a big can so I only put a few spoon fulls out at a time.

If HarleyTucker could talk she would say "It's not my favorite."
By Bay119 on Jan 20, 2021
She likes it to a certain extent. First off, the consistency is thick and gummy.I don't like the idea of "by products." She never finishes a whole can in a day. Every other day she gets a regular canned food product of better quality that at times I've mixed the leftover NF with the good stuff. Even then, she is able to nose through it and leave the NF eating only the good stuff.

They love it!
By WorriedMom on Feb 24, 2021
I have two 18+ year old cats. Both have stage two kidney failure. It’s been tough and expensive trying to find prescription food they will eat. This is the first one they both really go for. It’s a relief to see them eating well.

Great food. Need RX.
By RCdry on Jan 4, 2021
This is a great food for cats with urinary issues. I have been ordering shipments of this for a couple months. She's a picky eater, but enjoyed this food. Unfortunately, my cat died before I was able to open this particular box and use the food. Chewy not only refunded my money and sent me an email of condolences, but they also sent me flowers. I can't say enough great things about Chewy. I also want to say how much this food helped my cat in her last month's.

Discriminating Cat
By Benjamin on Dec 25, 2020
Our cat doesn't seem too impressed with this food and we have to come up with varying ways to present it to him. The reason for the 3 star rating is because in Benjamin's opinion this is the least palatable food he's ever had. He just can't get it through his head, though, that it will help him live a more comfortable life. Hey, we eat stuff that's good for us although we'd rather have cake, cookies, ice cream, etc. :-)

Vet Recommended!
By Jc61 on Feb 8, 2021
My cat us a picky eater and she like this. After my 15 year old cat was diagnosed with kidney failure we decided with our vet to put both our elder cats on a special diet. They both are eating good again.

Unfortunately, no go
By JB27 on Jan 3, 2021
As with most prescription foods, my 2 CRF cats won't eat this. Tried pureeing it, mixing it with broth and gravy--they just don't like it. I've tried a few others, same result. The only success was the Royal Canin dry A. You'd think by now they could formulate tastier foods for pets with serious medical conditions.

Not for picky eaters
By BarbC on Feb 1, 2021
My cat refuses to eat it. I would think Purina could come up with a prescription food that cats would actually eat. It will not help pet if they won't eat it! I will be trying a different brand.

My fussy old cat loves it
By CapeCodder on Dec 3, 2020
My 17 year old cat has been on a kidney diet for a few years and has been very picky about the choices available. Although he prefers stew or gravy type canned kidney food to pates, he amazingly gobbled this up! Much to my surprise as I took a chance on buying it. I just ordered some Purina Pro Plan NF Kidney Function Advanced Care dry food in hopes that he'll like it as well. He does get tired of the same old so I rotate his food -- this gives him another delicious option. TY Purina.

Game changer
By Caspermom on Dec 2, 2020
My 15 year old siamese has advanced kidney disease. She was on a high protein diet and was switched to this food nearly a month ago. I chop it up with warm water and she eats it every time. Since day two, everything has improved. I can tell she feels better. If she hadn’t had bloodwork, I wouldn’t know she was sick.
