Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Cat approved
By Guinevere on Feb 18, 2021
My cat's recent blood work and urine test revealed that she has signs of early kidney disease, so the vet recommended I start her on a special diet. She will start eating this food as soon as I put it down and will also "ask" to be fed (she'll sit in front of her bowl before feeding times waiting), which has never happened with other foods. Her appetite appears to have improved since we started her on the k/d stew. She doesn't seem to like the rice or carrot bits, though, as those are always left over in the bowl.

Great Kidney Care Specialty Food for my Sick Kitty
By magillilnb on Jan 21, 2021
My cat hates everything I've given him after he's had it a while. I'll think I'm on to something that he's going to stick with, but then he decides he's tired of it. I didn't have much hope for prescription kidney food, but much to my surprise, Chetty loves it. He eats it all and wants more. It's great, because he will need to be on it the rest of his nine lives. I'm hoping they will come out with other flavors in case he wants more variety, but for now, he loves both tuna and chicken flavors.

Could not get my cat to eat it.
By PamC on Jan 13, 2021
My cat just did not like it. He picked at it over a period of an hour but never finished a feeding. I even tried mixing it with some of his old food but no luck. Unfortunately I had to buy 24 cans. Too bad you can’t buy 1 can to sample it first. I am going to try some single cans of low phosphorous non prescription food from the pet store to try to find something that he might like.

Great food
By munchkin on Feb 7, 2021
My cat was recently put on the k/d diet. He LOVES the canned food. There are two flavors and he loves them both. The delivery is quick and I don't have to worry about him running out because I didn't make it to the store. I would highly recommend Chewy for any pet food delivery.

so far so good
By picky on Feb 18, 2021
My senior girl has become extremely picky over the past year. This is our fourth or fifth try at a food. She loves it for a week (if we’re lucky)and then refuses to eat it. We are going on a few weeks now and she still licks her plate clean.

Lifesaver for my granddaughter’s cat.
By Virginia on Feb 16, 2021
Smokey was diagnosed with kidney disease recently. The vet gave my granddaughter some food to try and told her to order it from Chewy. Smokey loves the food and we are hoping at her follow up visit that her blood work will show improvement.

My cat loves this
By Jake on Jan 1, 2021
Having a 14.5 year old cat be diagnosed with renal failure I wanted to prolong his life to as long as possible. This was the suggested food from his vet with the proviso that “he might not like this” but let’s give it a shot. He LOVES it thankfully. I have used their c/d with another cat for many years and have been pleased with the quality of their product. K/d is just another quality product that is giving him a chance at a longer and quality life.

Working for my old girl cat
By Megan on Jan 12, 2021
I have a 19 year old female tabby who has been in kidney failure since she was 14. Since then she's been on Royal Canin's F formula kidney care dry food but is not a huge fan of their wet food. She's very picky. She gobbles this Hill's chicken stuff right up, and it's been keeping her alive. She's still in kidney and heart failure, but will probably outlive all of us.

Sammy's new favorite food
By Nans on Feb 13, 2021
I have a 14 1/2 year old male cat. He was diagnosed with one kidney not functioning as well at the other. The vet prescribed HILL'S Prescription Diet for kidney care. My cat loves his chicken and tuna vegetable stew.
