The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care with Chicken Canned Cat Food is clinically proven nutrition that can help transform your pet’s life. As pets age, damage to the kidney tissues may occur, which affects the kidney’s role to function properly and filter toxins and waste from the blood. It is irreversible, and will lead to further loss of kidney function. This may also decrease their appetite, which could eventually result in the loss of muscle mass. And so the Hill’s nutritionists and veterinarians created this special diet, which supports your cat’s kidney function and helps to sustain muscle mass—in fact, the nutrition of k/d is clinically tested to improve and lengthen the quality of life.
Key Benefits- Protects vital kidney and heart function with proven nutrition developed by nutritionists and veterinarians.
- Stimulates appetite and increases caloric intake, and supports the natural ability to build lean muscle daily.
- Made with controlled phosphorus and low sodium, plus therapeutic levels of l-carnitine and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Also includes high levels of essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein.
- Made in USA and clinically tested to improve and lengthen the quality of life.

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

My cats love it!
By Dave on Feb 8, 2021
I have two cats that are picky eaters and was concerned that switching to a kidney sensitive cat food would be a problem. They absolutely love the Hill's k/d diet. When I served their previous canned food, they might go over to their bowls and have some and then come back later when they got hungry. With the Hill's k/d, they immediately eat and they always finish their portions. I'm also very pleased that they are enjoying a better diet.

Small cans verses Large cans
By Pumpkin on Feb 12, 2021
What I do I give my Cat a little for Breakfast and a little for Dinner. In between he has Chicken flavor dry food. I put the rest of the wet food in a glass container and put it in the refrigerator then in the morning I take a little for Breakfast and heat it up slightly in the Micro Wave and I do the same for dinner. He loves it...this way no worry about feeding all at once or wasting any of it. my Cat loves this!

Excellent products; excellent service!
By Mosh on Feb 6, 2021
I especially love the auto ship feature and that Chewy contacts my vet quickly for prescription orders. The food is boxed with care - the cans are never dented and the heavier items - like 40lbs bags of dry food are shipped in sturdy boxes that arrive in one piece! The one time I called customer service to inquire about a delivery the contact person was courteous and helpful. I have been a happy customer for over 5 years - that says it all.

My cat loves it!
By Nancy on Mar 2, 2021
I appreciate Chewy’s assistance in getting our vet’s Rx and the speed at which it was delivered. Our cat begs for this food so we know she enjoys each meal. She is 20 years old and we want her to be comfortable and enjoy her food. We appreciate your help in making this happen.

Prescription Diet for Cat
By KDPD on Jan 20, 2021
The Hill's Prescription Diet K/D is a food my cat actually likes. I tried another brand and he would not eat it. Once I discussed with the vet and he said it was one of the best prescription diet foods, I got the sample pack and my cat really liked it. I get both the wet and dry food and now my cat is eating well. I also love that Chewey gets the orders out to me within a few days. Thank you.

Patrick and Bailey recommend
By Megs on Jan 16, 2021
When I opened can I was a bit concerned about the texture (putting human likes to non human food!!) But the cat brothers chowed it down. Patrick has kidney disease and Bailey is his litter mate so I am giving it to both cats--no way to separate those two clowns anyway!!!

Improved Bloodwork
By KDDryFish on Dec 26, 2020
My cat was not super keen on the KD wet food as it is a little less firm that traditional Friskies wet food. I’ve found that refrigerating it does marginally improve the situation. Either way, using this in conjunction with the KD dry food definitely improved my girl’s bloodwork and her appetite. We were basically on our last leg and now the bloodwork is just outside of a normal range, which was a huge improvement so 5 out of 5.

Dented cans but cat loves food
By Leaptian on Jan 2, 2021
This is the first time I have purchased this for my kitty that is 13 1/2 years old. She is pretty finicky but loves this. She has always eaten Wellness wet food but never liked the chicken flavor but she gobbles this up. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was due to several cans being badly dented and needing to be thrown out.

Smells gross, but cat loves it!
By Meow on Jan 9, 2021
My cat has gotten a little picky with other prescription kidney foods, so we decided to give this one a try. It was an instant hit, and my cat gobbles it all up in one sitting! My only complaint is that this stuff smells nasty, but I'm fine with that as long as my cat is happy :)
