This formula is safe for chickens to eat.

Is the Alfahay Probiotic Alfalfa Farm Animal Feed, 50-lb bag solid/compressed or loose?

Answer by ChewyJan 23, 2025
The alfahay would be in a bale form. It can of course be broken apart to be fed with grains or other supplements, but it is not loose in the bag as a grain would be.

Is this good for guinea pigs?

Answer by ChewyDec 10, 2024
This forage is ideal for horses, cattle, pigs/swine, deer, goats, sheep, birds, chickens, ducks, turkeys, llamas, and exotics.

Is this good/safe for geese in winter?

Answer by ChewyAug 26, 2024
Alfahay is a fermented Alfalfa with apple cider vinegar. If your geese can digest alfalfa and apple cider vinegar then it would be safe for them. It is always recommended to speak with a veterinarian before changing your pet's diet.

You really have to have an understanding of what this is. It is a fermented product-think of sauerkraut for humans and how different it looks from cabbage. For fermentation process they use apple cider vinegar which truly makes a massive difference in any animal that is sick, weak, or particularly has stomach ulcers or digestive issues. This really can turn them around in a very positive way very quickly. It’s very nutrient dense and loaded with probiotics. I’ve had some animals that I’ve rescued from very bad situations that couldn’t eat anything but this and it turned them around very quickly!!! While it doesn’t look good-brown and wet sometimes with white spots that look like mold but it’s NOT-that’s exactly what you want because that means it’s been fermented properly. It is spectacular and I always have some on hand.

I've been a happy Chewy customer for years and this is the first time I've been disappointed with a product. NOT the fault of Chewy, this stuff had problems at the factory. It was extremely wet and foul-smelling, and the center of it is solid mold. It also came pre-infested with fungus gnats, and I unfortunately opened the bag inside the house. Any tips on getting rid of an infestation of fungus gnats? I was expecting this to be like Chaff hay, a product I used to give my donkey but this is definitely not that!

The other horses in the barn seem to really like it and I really like the idea of it, especially as we move into winter. , I have not been able to get her to eat it. I’m about a weekend of giving her little handful and she just does not like . However, there are several horses that are quite eager to eat it so I think it is just her she’s a bit of a Primadonna

I was a little worried after reading the negative reviews and the smell when I opened the bag but my horses love this stuff! I normally buy chopped Alfalfa but it is so dusty and to be honest this was an accident but I am glad I got it. No more soaking! A couple of them were unsure at first but after a day or so they are now hooked

Great product

Aside from delivery company putting cardboard boxes out in the pouring rain, the product is wrapped in plastic & was fine. Alfalfa appears good. Waiting to see how

Alfahay is fabulous!

This is such an easy way to feed alfalfa to my goats. They love it, and now I'm lucky to get into their paddock to put the feeder trays down without getting knocked

Inaccurate description

It was ground up fine wet hay. No leaves intact. Description is very inaccurate. I would have returned it but decided it was not worth sending it back once open

Yes, there WILL likely be "mold" in it. It has a very pungent odor, but the horses LOVE it! Once you're used to this product, you'll be able to tell the difference between the good and actually spoiled. The white "fur rings" are good! Green, slimy, spoiled smell (and it's not going to smell pretty.....it's fermented in apple cider vinegar, but the REAL spoiled REEKS!) This typically happens if you end up with a punctured/torn bag. I'll continue to purchase this hay, as the horses devour it and there's never any wasted.
