About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

What level is this toy?

Answer by ChewyApr 11, 2019
The Difficulty level for this toy is 2. Which makes this game challenging for your pup, so he may not get it on the first try.

What is the Highest level toy she has?

Answer by ChewyJan 01, 2020
Nina Ottosson toys come in levels 1, 2, and 3 to challenge your dog as they learn to solve puzzles.

My dog loves this toy, but also loves to chew on the little bones. Is it safe for him to chew?

Answer by ChewyNov 07, 2018
Every dog plays differently and, since not all toys are created equal, it’s always best to keep a close watch on your pup in case things get ruff. Supervised play will help toys last longer and most importantly keep your pal safe. No dog toy is truly indestructible, so always remove the toy from playtime if pieces begin to break off. The bones are not intended as chewy toys and should not be consumed.

Where is this toy manufactured?

Answer by ChewyNov 08, 2018
This toy is made in China and tested in independent 3rd party labs.

My cat loves this!

My cat is only a genius when it comes to food, otherwise he's a big goofy fluffy idiot. But he was too smart for the cat puzzles so we tried this and he loves it!

My cat is only a genius when it comes to food, otherwise he's a big goofy fluffy idiot. But he was too smart for the cat puzzles so we tried this and he loves it! Keeps him entertained and out of trouble. We did have to leave off the bone things - not sure if they were too difficulty or just offended him - but this toy keeps him engaged and interesting better than anything else. Highly recommended by Newton the Cat

This is the third puzzle I bought my dog. I tried it on easy mode first and he finished it in under 90 seconds. A few days later I added the bones to make it a bit harder and he still cleared it super fast. I feel like this is less of a puzzle and more of a slow feeder.

Very sturdy but not for all dogs

My young German Shepherd prefers the puzzle with flippers and round pegs that slide to this one. She gets frustrated and just picks it up and drops it upside down

My young German Shepherd prefers the puzzle with flippers and round pegs that slide to this one. She gets frustrated and just picks it up and drops it upside down to get the treats out. It works but I don’t think it’s meant to be solved that way! My older dogs love it though. The white bone pieces are difficult to get out of the puzzle.

Good puzzle - works the brain

This puzzle feeder has four small rubber supports on the base meant to stabilize it. However, these anre easy for a dog, like my puppy, to remove. These rubber supports poses a serious choking hazard, making this puzzle feeder unsuitable for young dogs. Additionally the design is too simplistic anyway, so won’t challenge a dog to begin with.

Nala has had this toy before. She loves it! I barely had time to put the treats inside. She was so excited to get it!

We like to give our 8 months old puppy her meals in a puzzle feeder to help engage and tire her out. We have another Nina Ottosson puzzle feeder and I felt like she was getting too good at it, so we got this one. We are once again very impressed by the quality of the toy. It feels like they really designed it with dog anatomy and puzzle solving skills in mind. Mango loves her puzzle toys and we will definitely be coming back when she gets good at this one.

You on a basic level this was difficult for my dogs to use. There’s not as much space in between the levels to make it easier for them to work through the puzzle. Well, I know the puzzle is meant to be challenging. It ended up being too challenging. I definitely recommend this for older advanced dogs..
