About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Questions & Answers

6 Customer Questions

How is this one different from the “adult” version? I already have this one.

Answer by ChewyOct 14, 2020
There is no difference between the adult and puppy version besides color.

Can this toy be disassembled without tools and put through the dishwasher?

Answer by ChewyOct 06, 2025
The toy should be turned upside down, then push the center pieces on the bottom together and gently pull up on the bottom piece. Repeat this for each layer, and it comes apart quite easily.

How many white bones come with this?

Answer by ChewyJun 03, 2021
This toy includes 3 dog bone covers.

What are the dimensions of the bones?

Answer by ChewyNov 03, 2021
The smaller bone pieces measure approximately 2-1/4 inches by 1-1/2 inches.

Challenge without frustration

I use this as a slow feeder bowl. Capacity-wise it works great for a 7m puppy, but once he’s fully grown we might have overflow.

Loves This Puzzle

This is one of the easier puzzles for young dogs. She's pretty rough with it trying to get the treats out. Lacey seems to enjoy puzzles. Because she's been sick

This is one of the easier puzzles for young dogs. She's pretty rough with it trying to get the treats out. Lacey seems to enjoy puzzles. Because she's been sick for six weeks, I haven't been giving her treats. The puzzles have been put away for awhile.

Too Light

The idea of spinning the bones around while exposing treats is a good idea; the white caps add to the challenge, but the toy is too light. My dog simply flipped

The idea of spinning the bones around while exposing treats is a good idea; the white caps add to the challenge, but the toy is too light. My dog simply flipped the toy over to dislodge the white caps and the treats. I had to screw the toy onto a wooden board to prevent my pup from flipping it over.

Didn’t take my 1 year old German Shepherd to figure it out. First couple days were a real learning process. I give it to her for a mid morning treat. She looks forward to it and after a couple weeks, she knows how it works. Next is using the white stops to see how long it takes for her to figure those out.

Our dog is entertained for a long time with this puzzle! Depending on # treats hidden, it can be 10 or 30 minutes. Very good occupation. The white plastic bones are not bite-resistant, so those are pulled away early.

Waste of my money

Very disappointed in this product. Dog figured it out too easy without the white bone inserts. When I put those in she just chewed them up.
