Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Could work for some dogs

We chose this puzzle because I thought we would need to advance through stages 1 through 4 sequentially. I didn't want to buy a level 3 and have it be too complicated but this is really more like a level 1, it's just harder to get the treats out. It's so hard to get the treats out unfortunately that once he gives up, they go stale and I have to stand over the trash can shaking it vigorously to remove them. It is time consuming. I believe there is a treat currently stuck inside somehow as I put in 2 and only 1 came out but no idea what it's stuck on or how. I don't believe it comes apart and am afraid to break it. We will try other puzzles, probably from this brand, but this particular puzzle was not a good fit. If your dog will violently shake it until they come out, this would be great for you.

Not good for a chewer

When I first gave this to my 10 pound micodoodle he had a blast and played with it for about 20 minutes. But the second time I gave it to him while I was on a conference call and he completely destroyed it. In general he is not a chewer but the temptation of the treats did the toy in. Probably a great toy if your dog isn't a chewer!

Not sturdy

The first time I let my dog try it out he made it about 15 minutes before getting frustrated and tried chewing on it (which seems like a reasonable reaction for a dog struggling to get at a treat). I took it away before he did damage, but based on the thin plastic material it would not last long if I tried it again.

Puzzles? Not this one!

This looks like a great puzzle toy, but if your dog is a chewer (at all), this is not a good toy. I filled it, and gave it to me girl. She threw it around, then promptly started chewing on it. Before I could even get it from her, she had already chewed the edge. If your doggo doesn’t chew on things this toy would probably be fine. Just not for doggos that chew.

Minutes of entertainment

I bought this for my 20 lbs. Terrier mix and she loves it. It takes her a few minutes to get all the food out. She flips it around with her nose and feet. She does not chew on these types of toys. The outside of the toy has a rubbery coating on it. It is challenging to fill this with food as the holes on the top and bottom are small. I can only get about 1/4 cup of food into it, using both holes. There isn't a way to open it for easy filling or cleaning. I have tossed this in the dishwasher which cleans the outside nicely, but I am not sure how well it cleans the inside. As always, if you have a dog or puppy that like to chew on plastic, supervision is required. In addition, if you have a dog that would rather chomp through the plastic to get the food, this might not the toy for your dog. I don't think this is strong to hold up to serious chewing.

Puzzle-solving, with monitoring!

After a short learning curve, my buddy got the hang of flipping and pushing around the puzzle to dispense food/treats. The dividing disc in the middle is made of a clear heavy duty plastic...not indestructible. I usually retrieve puzzles and most toys to prevent damage once the food supply is exhausted. There are a few teeth marks on the inner dividing disk at the maze opening, but nothing making it inoperable...yet! Great maze to keep your pal occupied for a bit, but I would highly recommend removing it once the ruckus is over! This is one extreme chewers would go to town on if left unattended!

Awesome toy

4 stars for durability- definitely not made to withstand dog teeth. However it’s really cool ! I had to teach My dog to flip it and show her how to get the treats out without demolishing the toy. I only allow her to have it supervised. It does keep her super entertained and she gets excited when I get it out ! I fill with pieces of her dog food and a couple good smelly treats. Just make sure you supervise !

My 4 month old Aussie loves it!

Bought for my 4 month old Aussie. He really likes it. He takes his paw and will slap it around the kitchen. I can fit 1/4 cup of kibble and it keeps him busy for about 8 mins. I’ve washed it and it was easy to wash and let air dry over night.

Great dog treat dispenser

My dogs love these! It keeps them busy and slows down their eating.

Not for smart dogs!!!

My dog figured out how to find the treats within a couple minutes, them proceeded to chew and destroy the toy. Worthless and a waste of money for our needs.
