About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Questions & Answers

2 Customer Questions

what level is this puzzle?

Answer by ChewyOct 29, 2022
This is a level 4 puzzle and requires your dog to complete a series of steps in the correct order to keep discovering more hidden treats. The MultiPuzzle is perfect for ultra smart dogs that have already mastered levels 1-3.

Would my dog be able to break the tiles and/or wheels and chew them?

Answer by ChewyFeb 23, 2025
This dog toy is not indestructible and a dog can chew the tiles. Do not leave your dog alone with a treat puzzle, do not let your dog chew on the game or pieces. Inspect for damage and remove if broken.

We doggy-sit on occasion and my daughter has a pit bull that gets bored and finds trouble. This toy kept him busy but when he gets frustrated, he goes into destroy mode. Fortunately, the plastic squares snap back in easily enough. Requires supervision for food-aggressive dogs.

More durable than others; layers of complexity

My dog is recovering from an injury and needed more stimulation during meal time. This feeder works well, and the videos on Nina Ottosson’s YouTube were helpful

Right amount of difficulty

My dog is obsessed with it, spent great deal of energy on it. He can solve the outer round puzzle but eventually failed to get the food from the inner part

Missing pieces on arrival, broke in less than a week

Upon arrival it was missing pieces and kibble was falling in the sides where neither our puppy nor human could remove. One of the orange pieces fell off within 4

Upon arrival it was missing pieces and kibble was falling in the sides where neither our puppy nor human could remove. One of the orange pieces fell off within 4 days as well making it a choking hazard. Not sure we’ll be able to return as it was technically used but it honestly feels like it was broken upon arrival.

He was bad about doing his nighttime pee, he’d just sniff everything for hours if I let him. Now I load his puzzle with treats place it on his crate, take him out for his “midnight pee”. He goes out might sniff once but pees and runs me back inside! He immediately settles after working the puzzle. Love our new routine!

my dog is good at puzzles

we have many puzzles and he’s very good at all of them. I don’t think this one was exciting for him, though not compared to the others.

Poorly constructed

If you have a 95lb German Shepherd don't bother. Got this at the recommendation of my vet for mental stimulation. He was able to figure it out very fast, however

If you have a 95lb German Shepherd don't bother. Got this at the recommendation of my vet for mental stimulation. He was able to figure it out very fast, however he destroyed it without even trying. This gem lasted a total of 23min before it fell apart. This is the 1st puzzle he has had, however I will not be using this company's toys. Hope I can get a refund. Total waste of money.
