FAQ
The OnGuard Plus Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs is a long-lasting, effective solution for protecting your dog against fleas, ticks, and other pests. In addition to killing fleas and ticks, the Onguard Plus Flea and Tick Collar also repels mosquitoes. Each collar provides continuous protection for up to six months.
The collar releases active ingredients that spread over your dog's skin and coat, killing fleas and ticks on contact. It also repels mosquitoes. The sustained release of these ingredients ensures long-lasting protection.
The active ingredients are Deltamethrin and Pyriproxyfen. These components work together to kill adult fleas and ticks, repel mosquitoes, and prevent the development of flea eggs and larvae.

How long does the collar last? Each OnGuard Plus Flea and Tick Collar provides continuous protection for up to six months after the package is opened. For optimal effectiveness, replace the collar every six months.
Can I use the collar on puppies? The collar is safe for use on puppies aged 12 weeks and older. Do not use the collar on puppies younger than 12 weeks.
Can I use the collar on my pregnant or nursing dog? Please consult your veterinarian before using any flea and tick treatment on a pregnant or nursing dog.
No, the OnGuard Plus Flea and Tick Collar is specifically formulated for dogs and must not be used on cats. Using a dog-specific flea and tick collar on a cat can cause serious health issues. For flea and tick protection for cats, please use products specifically designed and labeled for feline use.
Are there any side effects? Most dogs tolerate the collar well. However, some dogs may experience mild irritation around the neck. If this occurs, remove the collar and bathe your dog with Dawn® dish soap or a similar grease-cutting product. You may also contact our emergency medical team at 800-951-3217 or consult your veterinarian.
Mild scratching is normal, especially if your dog does not typically wear a collar. If your dog doesn’t like how the collar feels, try gradually introducing it over a few days. In many cases, dogs gradually stop noticing the collar over 2 or 3 days. However, if your dog experiences redness, hair loss, or scratching after applying the collar, it could be a sign of irritation or an allergic reaction:
- Remove the collar immediately.
- Bathe your dog with Dawn® dish soap or a similar grease-cutting product to remove any residue.
- Monitor your dog for any signs of discomfort or worsening symptoms.
- Consult your veterinarian if the redness and scratching persist for more than 48 hours after bathing, or if symptoms become more severe.
Paresthesia is a condition characterized by abnormal sensations such as tingling, itching, or numbness, which can occur if your dog has a sensitivity to the collar's active ingredients. Signs of paresthesia include excessive scratching, restlessness, or discomfort around the neck area.
If you notice signs of paresthesia or other adverse reactions: 1. Remove the collar immediately. 2. Bathe your dog three times with Dawn® or a similar degreasing detergent to remove the collar's residue. 3. Rinse your dog thoroughly after each bath. 4. Reach out to our emergency medical team at 800-951-3217. 5. Consult your veterinarian for further advice and treatment if symptoms last longer than 48 hours after bathing or if symptoms get more severe.
Consult your veterinarian before using the collar in conjunction with other flea and tick treatments to avoid potential adverse reactions.
Please supervise puppies or dogs who are not used to wearing collars to ensure they do not remove the collar. If your dog chews on the collar, remove it immediately, provide water or a tasty treat, and consult your veterinarian. If your dog is not interested in eating or drinking, try playing with or otherwise distracting them for a few minutes first, then offer the treat again. Never force food or water during this time. Please contact our emergency medical team or your own veterinarian for assistance. Keep the collar out of reach of children and pets when not in use.
If your dog ingests any pieces of the collar, please either contact your veterinarian or reach out to our emergency medical team for assistance. They can be reached by calling 800-951-3217.
Ensure the collar is fitted correctly and in contact with your dog’s skin. Also, keep in mind that it can take 3-4 months to completely clear a flea infestation and that treating your pet’s environment is an important part of treating a flea infestation. For more help, please call 800-951-4216 during regular business hours or 800-951-3217 evenings or weekends. If the collar is properly fitted and you still notice fleas or ticks, consult your veterinarian for further advice.
This product does not expire, which means you will not see an expiration date on the packaging. The shelf life of the OnGuard Plus Flea and Tick Collar is between 3 and 5 years as long as the collars are stored correctly. Keep the collar in its original packaging in a cool, dry place until ready for use.
For general non-emergency product questions, please call us at 800-951-4216. If your dog is experiencing a medical emergency, please call 800-951-3217 for help.
You should consult your veterinarian if: • Your dog shows signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling, or hives. • The irritation or redness does not improve after removing the collar and bathing your dog. • Your dog shows persistent or severe signs of discomfort, such as excessive scratching, restlessness, or changes in behavior. • You have any concerns about your dog’s health or reaction to the collar.
If you have both dogs and cats in your household, we recommend the following precautions: 1. Wipe the collar: Before putting the collar on your dog, wipe off any excess powder. Doing this helps ensure your cat does not accidentally ingest any of the active ingredients. 2. Separation during Application: Keep dogs and cats separated for 24 hours after applying the collar. Doing this allows the active ingredients time to spread over your dog’s coat while minimizing the possibility of accidental contact or ingestion by your cat. 3. Monitoring: Continue to monitor interactions between cats and dogs closely over the next 24-48 hours of collar use. Taking this extra precaution helps prevent direct ingestion of the collar by cats.
If you think your cat has licked or ingested any or part of the collar, we recommend taking the following steps: 1. Remove the Collar: Immediately remove the collar from the dog to prevent further exposure to the cat. 2. Monitor for Symptoms: Watch your cat closely for any signs of discomfort, irritation, or unusual behavior. 3. Ask for help: If you think your cat has licked or ingested all or part of the Onguard Plus Flea and Tick Collar, please call our emergency medical team for assistance. They can be reached by dialing 800-951-3217. 4. Call your veterinarian: If your cat has ingested all or part of the collar, reach out to your veterinarian for advice.

He hated taking meds and the very last one he took he threw up and got really sick. Emergency room bill was $750. His collar works great and he no longer has to take meds. He gets an annual heartworm shot instead of that med as well. So much easier and effective.
Good value
Does not irritate Jeannie's neck, and seems to be keeping flea numbers down. But a few of the pests still persist.

I haven’t had this collar on my dog long enough to tell if it works yet. BUT- it has such a horribly strong chemical smell that I’m not sure it’s going to stay on long enough to find out. I cannot let the dog be near me like she usually is. Very disappointed and will not purchase again. Money wasted.

I can't use the mainstream collars due to side effects and the brand I used for years was discontinued. After trying others that smelled awful and just didn't work, this has been a nice surprise. The first week I noticed a couple of attached ticks but decided to leave it on. Now I get more ticks off of me than the dog. It has lasted 3 months and appears to be working well . The scent is not objectionable and I am very sensitive to strong odors. So far, I am pleased and plan on using it thru out the year. I think it is very reasonably priced
