About ORIJEN Dry Cat Food

The Pinnacle of Nutrition

Cats are obligate carnivores, and they thrive on a biologically appropriate diet. ORIJEN provides optimal feline nutrition by using unsurpassed quantities of fresh or raw meat from a variety of Wholeprey animal protein sources.

85-90% Animal Ingredients

With 85-90% premium animal ingredients, each ORIJEN cat food recipe provides essential protein, vitamins and minerals in their most nourishing forms. It’s a meaty diet designed to feed your cat’s carnivorous cravings.

Nourish As Nature Intended

Fresh ingredients preserved solely through refrigeration and raw ingredients frozen at the peak of freshness stay true to their natural form. This minimalist approach preserves important nutrients and keeps closer to the diet your feline evolved to eat.

With at least 15 fresh or raw ingredients in every recipe, ORIJEN kibble is the closest thing to feeding a raw diet.

ORIJEN recipes include meat, organs, and bone, so your cat can enjoy the most nutrient-dense and succulent parts of the prey.

The first 5 ingredients are always fresh or raw animal sources, including nutrient-rich meat, poultry, whole fish, and organs.

Transitioning to ORIJEN

Acclimate your cat to a new ORIJEN diet by transitioning gradually from the old food you were feeding. Start by replacing 25% of the old diet with ORIJEN food, increasing the new food amount proportionally over the next 10-14 days. By the end of the second week, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN.

ORIJEN makes foods to help pets thrive, so they can stay healthy and strong through all their days. Their Wholeprey approach means including the most nutrient-dense and delicious parts of the prey in their recipes, to deliver the complete nutrition cats and dogs evolved to eat. Help your best friend reach his fullest potential with a biologically appropriate diet from ORIJEN.

Questions & Answers

How many cups are there per pound of this cat food in particular ?

what is the carb content of this dry food?
Answer by ChewyJan 07, 2021
This formula has a carbohydrate content of less than 20%.

We will be picking up 2 Maine coon litter mate brothers this coming weekend and are considering this food. They will just be weaning at 12 weeks. Would we still feed 1/4 cup for each pound of body weight? And for this breed, would we continue with kitten food until 52 weeks or switch sooner?
Answer by ChewyJun 26, 2017
Orijen does still recommend feeding 1/4 cup per pound of body weight until the kittens are 20 weeks old. Once they have reached 20 weeks, they then recommend feeding them 1/8 cup per pound of body weight until they have reached 52 weeks old. Once they are 52 weeks old, they recommend to begin feeding them as according to the adult feeding guide for a lean cat.

It says "Made in the USA with some of the world's finest ingredients". My question is: Are the ingredients made in the USA?
Answer by ChewyFeb 16, 2021
ORIJEN sources ingredients regionally and does not source ingredients directly from China, though their B vitamins are made with raw materials that originate in China. This would apply to vitamins B1, B6, and B9, and is consistent throughout the pet food industry. ORIJEN food goes through a comprehensive supplier management and verification program to ensure ingredient safety. Up to 88% of the protein will originate from animal ingredients.

Great food!

I was a little nervous to change my cats to this food. The vet had recommended Purina pro plan for ragdoll kitten and my other kitten as well. My ragdoll wasn't gaining weight and her fur looked very oily. She looked sick to be honest. My other cat was just very skinny. After changing to this food they both have gained weight and look healthy! My rag dolls fur looks so much better and even my short haired kittens fur looks thicker and so soft! My ragdolls eyes are clearer and Both kittens have so much more energy! This food has worked wonders so far on my babies! It does smell bad and its expensive but it's definitely worth it.

Happy tummy maker

I wanted to transition 2 one yr. Old littermates from a kitten dry food to an adult dry food. They also have a wet food daily. I decided to try the Orijens as a treat first (aprox. 1/4 cup each). They "loved" it. The male kitty easily gets digestive upset with any newly introduced food, but not with the Orijens. He went and tapped the bag when I was near it to let me know that he and his sister who sat starring at me wanted more. It smells fresh and wholesome compared to other better grade dry cat foods. It was well tolerated with normal bowel movements noted in the litter box.

Kitties like it

I feed this dry food as an addition to their other freeze-dried raw and canned food meals, because it’s good to get them used to different types of foods. They like it and are happy, healthy kitties. Of course they need plenty of clean, fresh water as dry food is dehydrating for them which risks a UTI. So I only use this food as a supplement, but it’s a high-quality dry food.

Changed Formula, No Longer Recommend

I was excited by the news that Orijen had a manufacturing plant being put into the U.S., hoping it would make the food more affordable since it was directly sent from Canada. Unfortunately, it appears that Orijen has decided to change their formula as well. I feed my ferrets this food along with the Wysong Epigen 90 Digestive support and another Canadian food for many years as it was stated to be the best kibble on the market (cannot do raw feeding). Now this food has a higher amount of fruits and vegetables in it, which can cause insulinoma. But the peas are perhaps one of the worse additions as it can cause bladder stones that can turn tragic if not caught in time. I have noticed the food does not even look the same as it lacks the softness and dark color. Now I am having to look at another food for my ferrets since I do not want them to develop issues due to Orijen deciding to cheapen the recipe.

My cat is acting normal again

For over 2 years i have been on a hunt for a dry cat food that my 3 year old cat that would eat and that would help prevent his frequent bladder infections and extremely hard and dry stool. He drinks plenty of water and has HUGE urine clumps in litter box and vet says is not dehydrated. He refused moist food and no to most foods and acted as if he felt tired and just laid around and did little interaction with us. He was never overly interactive with us but over time got less so. Since eating Orijen he now walks up to me and rubs his tail on my leg and 'talks/meows' to me! So exciting! His (Socks) stools are no longer hard and dry and there is no sign of bladder infection! So exciting too that Socks now lays on bed with us now and watches television in the evenings! He seems to feel better and has more energy and now watches the squirrels eat the peanuts we put out in front of his window in the lanai. :) We have our cat back and he is no longer very thin and gained some weight and his fur is sooo much softer and fuller!

Paw Lickin' Good

I was somewhat surprised how well our cat transitioned to Orijen. She has never been much of a kibble eater, but I noticed that when I put a mix of her old dry food and the new Orijen in her bowl, she was eating much more of the Orijen and leaving the once loved Fancy Feast there. On the day that I gave in and just fed the Orijen, it disappeared ... and this has continued. She loves it! Time will tell how it impacts her health, but, for now, she's a happy kitty and that pleases me.

Didnt work for us

I have three cats (4, 4, and 12). They aren't usually picky with dry food - wet food is another story. None of them would eat this. They would take few bites and walk away. After several weeks of this and them begging for food we gave up and donated it to a cat rescue

Worth the Price

I was hesitant to purchase this food because of the price. I’m glad I made the decision to do so. My cat had eaten the same food everyday for 6 years and I felt she needed a change. She loved her first bowl of this food and continues to love this. Her fur coat looks healthier and she seems to have more energy. We’ll worth the extra dollars spent for this food.

Stinky, but my cats love it.

I had to turn my head when I first opened this, but it was like the call wild for my cats. I did get a couple of upset stomachs (2 out of 3 cats), but then I read somewhere to do it like when you’re switching dog foods, and shift percentages with the old food to transition them. I should have known. Now that I have, they still love it, and there are no more tummy problems. I have now put it on my autoship.

Very good quality

We purchased Orijen dry cat food 12 lb bag. Our Bengal seems to like it a lot cant find another brand that is specific to his breed. Orijen is however a bit pricey.
