About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Questions & Answers

3 Customer Questions

Does anyone know why one toy is labeled as puppy and the other adult? Is it level of difficulty or the size?
Answer by ChewyMay 18, 2021
The color is the only difference between the Outward Hound Puppy Hide N Slide Dog Toy and the adult version. They function exactly the same.

Does parts come off this puzzle?
Answer by ChewyNov 09, 2020
This toy has no removable parts for safer play.

Will this work with a pug? No snout to say so; just wondering if it is workable for a pug.
Answer by ChewyJul 13, 2021
This toy should be suitable for all breeds and sizes

Great Educational Toy

This toy is one my Daisy 's favourites. She goes absolutely bonkers over it!!! She sees us get it out and filling with her favorite treat which is Nutro berry yogurt bites. She can do this puzzle in record time. We love watching her. Most dogs need stimulation and if you have a pup like our Cavapoo they will love it.

Puppy enjoys it, but it’s a little to easy

I have a six month old husky, and she absolutely loves this toy. She always wants it refilled, so she can play with it again. However, it’s a little to easy for her. It didn’t take her very long to figure it out, and we need something a bit more challenging.

Great toy for GSD puppy

I bought this toy thinking it might provide Max (1yr German Shepherd) with some alternative play time. It was great! He loves playing with the toy and finding the treats. I keep switching things up so it's not the exact same puzzle each time. The only problem is that he figured it out really quickly, but still seems to enjoy playing with it. It's also easy to clean.

My Puppy Loves This

Purchased for my 9-week-old mini schnauzer, who's super smart. He absolutely loves it and I now feed all his dry food from this toy. It's simple enough that he immediately picked up the concept, but complex enough that after 2 weeks he's still fully engaged each time I feed him a meal or snack from it. Plus it's really helped with preventing him from inhaling his food.

Nailed it!

Bandit nailed this puzzle in two minutes lol. When they description says will keep your pup busy for hours, don’t believe it. However, it is extremely well made, does the job, and the pups love it!

A great way to slow her down, a little.

Lily learned the ins and outs very quickly, but she still likes to eat some of her food by using this game. If she's not eating breakfast, I know she's waiting for me to use this. I need to get some tougher ones too.

Too easy to get the treats

Our Emma had every treat out in a matter of minutes! The toggles move too easily. I tried tightening them up but that didn't really help. But she does enjoy it

Much too easy

Put the treats in and Sammy Charles has them all open within seconds. He enjoys all the treats but it is no challenge at all for him to open them up.

Our dog loves this!

Sturdy! We bought a different puzzle toy from another place and it didn't hold up well. This one passed the test with flying colors! Would definitely recommend.

Great fun for cats and dogs

I bought one of these for my cat and one for my mom’s maltese/spaniel cross. It seems to be well made and sturdy and I love that there’s no loose pieces. I even like the color, it goes with my decor more than most pet toys. Both the cat and dog have learned how to play with the puzzle and seem to have a lot of fun once they got the hang of it. For my cat I use a very smelly crunchy treat that I only use in the puzzle. This really increased her motivation to get the treats!
