Having priced the usual DIY makeshift "storage container/foam cooler" feral shelters...believe it or not, this ends up being cheaper than the DIY things, especially since foam coolers are impossible to find when you actually need such a shelter (the very cold Ohio winter, here) and the cost of rubbermaid containers (and the better knockoffs) has risen massively, Anyway, it's easy to put together, solid, big enough for at least 2 cats to snuggle together, even if you add straw. My only warning: do NOT use an electric screwdriver to put this together! A regular Phillips screwdriver works just as well and you won't risk cracking the wood if you accidentally misaim the screw. I also used wood glue along the ledge for the bottom floor panel, to help seal out the cold, but the shelter's just as sturdy without it. This shelter is great for apartment folks -- we've had consistent issues with ground crews throwing away the DIY shelters we'd put out, despite us having permission from the landlord. This shelter, though, is plainly NOT trash, so they leave it be. There's no outdoor electric outlets in our complex, either, so we added a self-warming pad and straw bedding, and it's perfect. We've ordered a second one, too -- sadly, an apartment complex is a common dumping ground for unwanted cats, and two more abandoned cats have shown up since we ordered this.
