I recently bought a cat house for a feral cat I call WarZone. He found his way to my home and I introduced him to his house with a warm blanket and finally I decided he might like hay. He seems to really like it. I know he is using it as some hay will always be scattered a bit outside. It has a nice scent and WarZone seems to like burrowing under it. A great product for an old feral cat. He is becoming a Chewy cat.
I bought a New Age Ecoflex cat shelter house from Chewy and am using the straw as bedding. It will both be warm for my feral cat & I think easy to replace when needed; probably have about 4 - 6 replacements left. Thankful you carry it.
Based on other reviews, I decided to try both the larger quantity boxed and the smaller quantity bagged straw and found the boxed to be much softer and fresher--perfect for filling our feral shelters for the winter. I have tried a few different vendors over the years, and the straw quality has varied a lot--even with the same vendor--but this particular shipment from Sweet Meadow Farm is some of the best I have received. Our cats seemed to approve, as they immediately settled in!
I have actually been using this to feed a small wine cap mushroom bed. :D They have been producing since June (it's late August now), so I think it's going well! It was a good smaller-scale solution for the contained bed on my little apartment balcony. If you're buying this for animals, some things to know: The pieces of straw are long, it's not chopped up, and there are some seed tops, straw smells fresh not musty, and it is nice and dry. It seems to be decent quality, if I still had rabbits I would have no qualms about using it for their bedding.
The bag is huge! I ordered two thinking it wasn't going to be very much but it goes a long way. I use it for the outdoor cat houses and they like it
I gave this product ONE STAR only because there wasn't an option for giving it NONE!! I ordered the large box that was available at some point in the past to have on hand for when the last of the small bags was used up. I was expecting that what the box contained would be what was in the small bags. My husband is livid because we just opened the box to replace the straw in the feral cat houses in our yard and found the straw is not even remotely like the quality of what we've purchased many times in the past. It's not even the quality of the bales we purchased for our straw bale garden. They've been in the yard for months and not a single weed has come of it. But we're expecting that just opening the box is going to cause trouble because there are so many wheat heads (as pictured in other reviews) and the straw is scraggly and not completely dry and it looks really dirty. I will buy the small bags again...not as cost effective but considering the alternative, it's really the only option. I am glad to see that Chewy has stopped offering the horrible stuff in the box!
A substantial amount of nice clean straw. It was perfect for my feral cat shelter.
It's good to know this straw is available year round. Makes a cozy bed for my feral cat to take naps
I got this to put in a cat house outside for the stray cats
Was expecting 4" or 6" chopped straw. This is not chopped. How can you say it is bedding for small animals? 1 box of this would bed a goat or horse. Not for ducks or chickens. Won't order again.
