I have never seen any dog food like this before. The texture of the product reminds be of the old freeze dried astronaut ice cream I used to get as a kid. It's really light and crumbles easily. I did not notice a smell to the food, but the dogs certainly can smell it. I followed the directions and rehydrated the product with warm water and let it set for a few minutes before mixing it with their normal food. (I cup of food to 2/3 cup water.) I crumbled some of the nuggets to make the water more flavorful when mixed with the other food. I was cautious to not completely switch up their food to avoid digestion issues. I mixed a half cup with each dogs' food. The dogs gobble this stuff up like they haven't had any food for days. I only fed it to them for their dinner meal. I did not notice any ill effects with either dog. The product claims to be very healthy for the dogs and has many beneficial ingredients.
This was my first time feeding my dogs any type of freeze-dried food, so I wasn’t sure how they would like it. I have two large dogs (a pit mix and a full blooded pit,) both 70+ lbs, so I ended up feeding them this as a topper. I already mix warm water in with their kibble so I was pleasantly surprised that the directions said to mix in warm water to hydrate the food! They ate their food right up with this mixed in! I like that this freeze-dried food is not overly fragrant or smelly. I also like that it can be eaten by itself as a meal or mixed into other types of food. The ingredients seem great and did not upset my pups’ tummies or anything! I would definitely feed this to them again!
We tried this product as a food topper and the dogs loved it. They also love it as a treat. When I tried putting warm water on it and serving it as a meal, it never really did get moist. However if I ever needed to push water, this would be a great way, because they drank every bit of water that these were sitting in. The amount of food recommended per pound, felt like it was pretty small. The pieces are so light that I think my dogs would both still be hungry with the amount recommended it just would not feel like they ate anything. Overall, I don’t think this is the food for us, but as a treat, yes!!
I want my service dog to be around a long time, so I know I need to feed her a quality dog food. I have been feeding her a quality dry dog food, but in the past few years, I have heard that using quality raw, or freeze-dried raw may be a healtier choice. I liked the idea of trying freeze-dried raw because I would not have to handle raw meat or worry about its freshness. Also in my research just raw meat is not a complete and balanced meal. I knew I did not have the knowledge to make sure she recieved all that she needed for a balanced diet. Primal freeze-dried raw is very easy to use. You can pour it in a bowl just like you do dry dog food, or you can add water. I liked the idea of adding water since my dog does not drink enough water and it gives me a chance to get more water in her diet. I liked that this Primal food was cage-free without antibiotics, steroids, or hormones. Also no corn, wheat, soy, lentils, or legumes. Since I knew you should transition to new food slowly, I started with just her breakfast meal for the freeze-dried raw food. She had no complications to the transition, and most important, she really does love the taste!
We used this food continuously as a top dress supplement to our normal kibble. Our 3 Border Collies absolutely LOVED it!!! The palatability is excellent, and consumption was great. We noticed no change in eating habits except maybe eating their food a bit faster. My only concern would be affordability with three active dogs. But it is a solid product with high quality ingredients, and I would consider using it as a topping in the future.
I was able to allow my 4 German Shepherds to taste test. Product is perfectly cubed sized and firm. My dogs all preferred the right out of the bag version. They all wanted more after the first piece. It was impossible to get a cool photo since they all had their noses on the bag. When I added water to this product and then added it to their food, they were not as happy. It also took over 30 minutes for the food to softened. The bag didn’t easily tear open as I would have expected As an addition to existing dog food without water or used as a training treat, this is an excellent product. I do not recommend adding water as it took too too long to soften the food and then must have lost some good smell since my dogs were not as interested when left dry.
My 60 pound Australian Labradoodle absolutely LOVES this food! The food is dehydrated so you mix 1 cup of food with 1/3 cup of water. The only reason it didn't get a 5 star review is because the food doesn't absorb the water very well. This, however, makes absolutely zero difference to my dog. I'm fairly certain he could care less whether it is served dry or wet. Because it can be served dry, one great perk of this food is that is a perfect size to be used as a treat. This would be great for a dog in training, perfect size for a tiny reward when learning commands. Overall, my dog highly recommends Primal Raw Pronto, and I'm slightly annoyed by the water situation but not enough to not continue buying it.
My dog really enjoyed this product. I was skeptical at first, since You have to rehydrate it. But she loved it! I like that you can use whatever liquid you want. We used both water and chicken broth. Both ways were gobbled up right away. This would be good next time our pug gets her teeth cleaned. She inevitably has to have a few pulled (pug life). So she needs soft food for a bit. If we add enough liquid, it’ll be soft enough. I also love that all the fruits and vegetables are organic! All in all, this was a great find!!
I give our 85 lb chocolate lab mix and 75 lb pit mix part canned food and part dry food. They always eat the canned first and then the dry, but with this they eagerly ate up the Primal first. I love the convenience of it and know they are getting healthy food. It is pricey, though, for large dogs, so I ordered more and just give some of it with their dry and they still feel like they are being treated. Would definitely recommend - particularly for those with smaller dogs. Would love to be able to use just this.
I have 2 dogs who both loved this food! We used it as a meal topper and they did not hesitate. I also gave them an option between the two and they went right for this over their regular food. No digestion or GI issues afterwards. I’d buy this but I gave 4 stars as I don’t think I’d use it as anything other than a meal topper.
