Do you have to use all the panels or can you use 1 less if not needed that long?

When used as a gate between two walls, additional panels can not be added as the gate is designed to fit openings 50.5 inches to 192 inches.
When used as a play yard, panels must be added or subtracted in sets of two for the freestanding enclosure to function properly.

Do you have to take the brackets off the wall to remove the gate only to put it back hours later?

It is possible to remove the gate, without removing the wall mounts once attached to the wall.
