Great alternative to Royal Canin Renal Support
My dog has kidney disease, so the vet said she needed to be on a lower protein, low phosphorus dog food. I started her on Royal Canin Renal Support and she was doing fine, but to be honest I was disappointed in the ingredients list: Brewers rice, corn, chicken fat, chicken by-product meal, beet pulp. Then I found the SquarePet VFS Low Phosphorus food. I compared the nutritional value to the Royal Canin, and found that the protein and phosphorus levels were comparable to the prescription-only Royal Canin, but the SquarePet VFS didn’t require an prescription. The list of ingredients on the SquarePet VFS is what really sold me: Brown Rice, Whole Egg, Turkey. The ingredients just seemed so much more enticing! My dog loves the taste and is doing well on this food. And I appreciate that I don’t need a prescription to get it ordered. The price is comparable to the Royal Canin - I’m not buying it to save money; rather I prefer the ingredients and the convenience.
Just what we needed!
When my 17 year old dog was diagnosed with kidney disease, I first tried a brand of food you add your own water, protein and oil to. It was not only a hassle when I was in a hurry, my dog lost a significant amount of weight. I saw this kibble and decided to give it a try. He LOVES IT. In just a few weeks, he's gained all his weight back and his fur has filled in. I don't know yet about his kidney numbers, but he appears to just be in better health now. The price is also slightly better compared to prescription dog food, so definitely a plus.
Our older guy needed a new food to help with his kidneys. Since he can not eat chicken we were searching everywhere (seems all dog food makers think chicken is good for dogs). Found this low protein low phosphorus food with turkey. Ran it by our vet he approved the percentages. Ran it by our old man and he gobbled it up. Hope it will help in our fight to keep him with us as long as possible.
SquarePet VFS Low Phosphorus
I have a 1 year old fur baby diagnosed with liver issues. Her ALTs are extremely high. I experienced difficulty in finding a low protein dry kibble that was non prescription food and also one that comes in a small bag as she is a very picky eater. Being that she is particular, I did not want to purchase a large bag, especially if she would not eat it. Upon opening the bag, I noticed it does not have a strong odor nor does it feel oily in my hands. Baby girl has been eating this for about 2 weeks now and no complaints, so far. I was concerned that the kibble might be too big for her as she is tiny dog. She has had no difficulty chewing the kibbles. The kibbles are a small square shape but thin. I also have been feeding this to my senior fur baby as his ALTs are slightly elevated. So happy that both of my fur kids are happily enjoying their kibbles. I also give these as treats to both of my dogs.
Grateful for this kidney diet alternative!
Our 11 year old Golden-Irish was diagnosed with Protein Losing Nephropathy and has to be on a kidney diet. He's not very particular but would not eat Hill's. I made a spreadsheet comparing the other k/d brands. I really like the ingredients in this food; they seem so much healthier than the prescription diets. The protein, phosphorus, etc line up well compared to Hill's and others. And our dog LOVES it! I wish they made a canned version because I like to provide a topper. Right now I'm using Blue Buffalo canned kidney food which he also loves, and alternating with a home cooked topper of regular and sweet potatoes with a little chicken. He's happy and I finally feel good about what I'm giving him.
I'd hoped this would work, but...
...neither of my dogs will eat it. The ingredient panel is much better than the brands you'll get through your vet, which is why I'm giving it three stars. My search for a solution will continue, though.
Excellent option for KCD
The Hills KD made my dog sick, as did Dr. Harvey's. I was nervous to try this new option, but encouraged by the ingredient list. I'm so glad I did because it seems to agree with her (we are doing a super slow transition and are at 50/50 so far) and she likes it. I'm so comforted by the simple ingredients, rather than all the corn and other junk that is in the prescription KD foods. Grateful for this option - thank you Square Pet!
dog wont eat it
My spoilt 15 yo mongrel is allergic to chicken and cannot eat any other renal diet on the market. She ate this stuff enthusiastically for a week, but since then, I've had to supplement with milk or bone broth- otherwise, she wont touch it. That being said, I am grateful this is avail- nothing else will work unless I cook for her (and I hardly even cook for myself). She's on daily fluids and meds- I can barely keep up so I really need to not have to cook on top of everything else.
Great for dog
My dog with kidney problems will actually eat this food and is doing well on it. So glad I found it.
Bulldog didn’t like it
Our English Bull dog was diagnosed with IBS and protein enteropathy, amongst other things so his digestive system is extremely sensitive. Unfortunately, he was not excited about this food at all. We won’t be purchasing it again.
