Questions & Answers

6 Customer Questions

Can I use this for a bearded dragon?
Answer by ChewyAug 03, 2018
This product is designed specifically for Aquatic Turtles and Hermit Crabs, while generating biofilm for algae-eating fish and shrimp.

Is the product good for my bristlenose pelco to eat?
Answer by ChewyJan 05, 2021
This driftwood is suitable for use in a pleco tank. Driftwood is excellent for algae growth. Your Bristlenose Plecos will eat the algae right off. While they do this, they’ll also be consuming plenty of fibrous material to keep them healthy.

Will this driftwood help lower freshwater aquarium pH?
Answer by ChewyOct 27, 2020
Cholla wood is a fantastic and natural way to lower and buffer pH.

Will this wood leach tannins discoloring the tank water?
Answer by ChewyOct 03, 2022
Submerged driftwood will release tannins (tannic acid) that can alter your aquarium water in a few important ways: color, pH, and hardness. The release of tannins will tint your water–sometimes desirable in Betta tanks or “blackwater” biotope aquariums. The release of tannins decreases over time and with routine water changes, the clarity of your aquarium water will increase. Tannic acid has antibacterial properties and can also bring down an aquarium’s pH and hardness, depending on the buffering capacity of the water.

Mystery Snails Love It

I bought this for my snail/shrimp aquarium. The shrimp and snails love climbing on it. It also does a good job of forming a bio-film and algae on it, which they love to eat.

Perfect for small plecos

Perfect size for my 36 gallon tanks with catfish and bristlenose plecos. Full size plecos (common, hi-finned, etc) would benefit from a larger size cholla or a different type of driftwood. It took only 3 days in a bucket of water for the cholla to sink and the tannins to leach out. This is a simple way to provide smaller plecos with the wood they need in their diet.

These are short

I measured these - I got two packs of them (so 4 total) and not one of them is 6 inches. they are all between 3 and 4 inches. Didnt work for purpose intended but made a decent decoration in my tanks.

Small fish tank Drift wood

Unfortunately did not work out for me. Floats as much as I tried to weigh it down by placing in between large rocks, etc. Also, probably turned the aquarium water a tinge of yellow because of the wood’s resin even though it was soaked for two days in a separate water container.

Quick to prepare for aquarium

Cool pieces of wood. Relatively small so make sure you note the size. I like this Cholla wood because it only took about a week of soaking to release the tannins. My small plecos like it too. (I have been working on another piece of mopani wood for weeks that is still turning water dark red/brown with tannins. I am thankful I was able to get this piece of Cholla prepped and added to my aquarium quickly for my plecos.)

Maybe they'll work better for you

I've bought cholla before from other retailers and had no problems, but these from Chewy never sank. I had them in my tank for a week and they just kept floating. Even when weighted down they would pop up, so if you don't mind that they're good.

Must haves!!

Now my baby fish have some place to hide that bigger fish cannot get at them. And, the release of tannins from this wood is a plus as a water conditioner.
