Changing the Bio-Bag®: When water flows excessively from the Wonder Tube Chamber into the aquarium, it is time to change the Bio-Bag®. The Bio-Bag® should be changed once per month to prevent backflow and avoid filtration problems resulting from a clogged Bio-Bag®.

Using a ready-to-use, assembled Bio-Bag®

  • Remove filter box cover.
  • Lift Bio-Bag® and allow excess water to drain into filter box.
  • Dispose in garbage can.
  • Rinse new Bio-Bag®, insert into filter, replace filter cover.

Using an unassembled Bio-Bag®

  • Remove Bio-Bag® from filter, allowing excess water to drain into filter box.
  • Remove clip from frame, fold up frame flap, and remove floss bag from frame. Place new floss bag over frame.
  • Add one packet of Ultra-activated® carbon.
  • Fold flaps of Aerobic Frame® over filter bag and replace clip.
  • Rinse Bio-Bag®, insert into filter, replace filter cover.

Maintaining the Energizer: Caution: Only remove Energizer when absolutely necessary.

  • Unplug power cord, empty filter box, and place it upside down on a flat surface.
  • Grasp Energizer with one hand and filter box with the other. Gently turn Energizer counter-clockwise until its sidewall is parallel to the raised line on the bottom of the filter box.
  • Hold Filter Box with one hand and gently pull the Energizer with the other. (If necessary, rock the Energizer back and forth to ease removal.)
  • Clean inside of Energizer Well with a Q-tip Cotton Swab. Do not use a metal instrument of any kind. Before replacing Energizer, wet the “o-ring” with water, or coat its surface with a small amount of non-medicated petroleum jelly.
  • Replace Energizer and fill filter box with water. Check to be sure that Energizer is seated properly and does not leak. (When seated properly, the red o-ring will not be visible.)
  • Re-install filter.

Cleaning The Wonder Tube®:

  • Unplug power cord and remove filter box cover.
  • Lift Wonder Tube® out of filter.
  • Remove Magnet Impeller Assembly.
  • Clean all parts under running water. If needed, use a filter stem spring brush.
  • The Flow Control Knob can be removed to aid in cleaning. Before replacing the knob, wet its “o-ring” with water, or coat the surface of the o-ring with a small amount of non-medicated petroleum jelly.
  • Reinstall the Wonder Tube.
  1. Rinse Bio-Bag® and slide into v-notched slot in aquarium well wall. (Note: Before installing, fill wells with water and check for leaks.)
  2. Remove Bio-Foam® from Aerobic Grid®. Rinse it in cold water, squeezing until it is thoroughly wet. Place the Bio-Foam® back into the Aerobic Grid® and slide it into the filter box next to the Bio-Bag®.
  3. Hang filter tank on rear wall of aquarium.
  4. Assemble the Wonder Tube®. (Note: Not all filters include extension tubes.)
  5. Slide Wonder Tube® into filter box so that the impeller slide all the way into the Energizer Well. If necessary, add or remove extension tubes to position the strainer at least one inch above gravel. (Leave 3 inches above gravel for cichlids and goldfish.)
  6. Set Control Knob at maximum flow by pointing indicator arrow at aquarium wall.
  7. Pour water into the Wonder Tube® Chamber until it overflows into Bio-Bag® Chamber.
  8. Cover the filter and fill your aquarium with water (1/2 inches to 1 1/4 inches from top).
  9. Plug in power cord; the filter should start automatically within 10 to 20 seconds.
  10. If filter does not start, remove cover and slide Wonder Tube® up and down with one or 2 short strokes. Replace cover.

    Tetra power filters 40/60

By Fred on Jul 18, 2021

I have used these filters for years, they hold up well, have a long lifetime, and keep the tanks clean. Admittedly I use 2 for my 75 gal., 2 for my 55 gal., 1 each on my 20 gal's., and 1 on a 10 gal. They are easy to clean up and to change out the filter pads, though I change pads separately doing only 1 at a time and change out the second pad about 2 weeks later to keep the bacteria going. are they silent, no but are they noisy, no. I run these with undergravel filters as well. A good company with excellent They are good filters though...

    Constantly breaking

By Courtney on Aug 3, 2021

I have had this filter for a week and a half and it is constantly shutting off. When I do get it running, which takes several attempts, any slight bump will have it shutting off again. Not sure if I received one with a defective motor or not but I will be returning this one and getting a different brand.

    Bad filters by Tetra

By Mike on Jun 28, 2021

When they work they are fine, but Tetra products are all going down hill, bought these whisper 40s got a couple months, they stop working, look for replacement motor , it calls for T3 energizer ,mine have T2s, call TETRA , that was an experience in its self, like talking to a box of rocks, To me looks like wrong energizers or bad energizers. That I am stuck with. Or I can send the whole filter back to TETRA, at my expense and they will look at them. Cheaper to go buy new filter, different brand of course. This is not Chewys fault, Tetra just making cheaper products, and charging more.

    Sad & disappointed

By Kimberly on Jun 4, 2021

This looks to be a very nice sturdy filter; however, it is so loud. I have done exactly as the directions say but it is so loud, I cannot use it. Maybe I got a bad one? Not sure. Went and got a different kind of filter and it is so quite I can't tell it's on other than the water coming down...

NOISY and not a clean tank

By Unhappyfishfamily on May 23, 2021

We had a Tetra filter for 10 years but it finally quit on us. We purchased this as a replacement but it is getting noisier and noisier as it goes along. I would not recommend this filter to anyone that has the fish tank in the same room that they are in. Sorry Tetra but Whisper is not what we would use to describe this filter.

    past its prime

By scott on May 13, 2021

Have used these for decades, because of ease of cleaning. Brand new, 1 week old, SO NOISY hums, rattles, vibrates. Simply not good period. Read reviews on HAGEN Aquaclear filter, costs a bit more but rated very high, and has 2 year warranty. Bought it, and it is completely silent !

    Great Filter!

By CrazyCatLady on Mar 20, 2021

I love this filter! I had been shopping at pet shops for a filter similar to the old one that needed a new impeller that I couldn't replace. I bought one, but didn't like the way they placed the electrical cord and motor inside the aquarium, so I took it back. I was so relieved to find the Whisper Power Filter on your web site. My tank had been cloudy since the old impeller lost most of its wings, but within an hour after installing this new filter, the water was crystal clear! I also noticed that, in the instruction manual, a new impeller can be ordered if necessary!

    Good performance

By Dena on Feb 27, 2021

I was concerned about some reviews about leakage. I tested the product before installing in my tank. No leaks. I have been impressed over the performance. It's quiet. Replacement filters are most reasonably priced. I like the ability to adjust the water flow. Big improvement from the chain store filter!

    Terrific for 20 gallon tank

By LadyBlue on Mar 2, 2021

Our previous Whisper filter was smaller, for a 10 to 20 gallon tank. We worried this one would be too big, but it's perfect. Water much clearer now. We're buying another to have as a backup.
