FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

    I think it helps.

By Medicine on Jun 20, 2021

I have been giving this medicine to my 17 year old cat for a while now, I think it helps quite a bit. I know she is not going to get "better" her lungs are too bad. She takes 0.5 in a syringe every day and really hates it, I don't think she thinks it is chicken tasting at all. I wish there was a pill option for her. I called every local pharmacy to find this product and chewy was the only place that had it. Medicines are keeping her going and she is doing pretty well for her age and condition. Thanks chewy for providing this service.

    Slightly Greasy, but it works

By CathyP on Mar 12, 2021

I have a 14 year old diabetic cat who was recently diagnosed with Asthma. Since giving her this medication her coughing/wheezing has slightly improved. I know it’ll never get better until the inflammation can be resolved, but it’s been good to see her coughing fits being shorter & less violent. Regarding taste, she hates this. I tried putting it with her favorite Chicken flavored treats, and she sniffs & walks away. I tried hiding it in some stinky food, and after one sniff she can tell & avoids it. I had to resort to forced syringe feeding for her to take it. The feel is slightly greasy, so if you get it on your fingers it’s tough getting it off without a degreasing soap. For some reason it also tends to make the provided syringe stick when I am shooting the liquid into her mouth. So expect to put a little extra effort in the process. Overall I recommend the liquid if you’re good with handling & syringe feeding your cat. … more
