is this cooked before freeze drying

Answer by ChewyJan 26, 2023
These treats are fully cooked prior to being freeze dried.

My senior cat is on a strict no iodine diet for her hyperthyroidism. Do these treats contain any iodine at all? Thanks!

Answer by ChewyJan 14, 2021
These treats are made with 100% pure chicken breast. They have zero additives, preservatives, or anything artificial. Any vitamins and minerals in the Just One chicken treats would be the amount naturally occurring in chicken breast. There is no Iodine that is added in any part of the process. They do test all of their products for vitamin and mineral content using an independent lab. Their lab results show no detectable Iodine in the Just One Chicken treats.

Are they cooked before freezing? Or are they raw, uncooked?

Answer by ChewyJun 09, 2020
These treats are not raw, they are freeze-dried in small batches to remove moisture while retaining all nutrients and flavor.

Was there any heat to the chicken before it was freeze dried?

Answer by ChewyMar 16, 2023
The chicken in this recipe is fully cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit before freeze-drying. Fully cooking to 165 degrees is considered a “kill step” by the USDA and ensures that these treats are free from any harmful bacteria.

This is a good brand of freeze dried chicken. I prefer the old packaging with the see through window. I feel like they are hiding something now. This brand can have some sharp/hard edges but I sit with the cats and break them apart so it's not a huge problem.

The first couple bags that I bought of these treats were great! The cats loved them and they were a soft crumbly texture. The most recent bag I got has a lot of really hard pieces that I can’t even break apart with my hands and after about half of the bag, I stopped feeding them the treats because they started vomiting and having diarrhea. Some of the treats also had a really dark color. Not 100% sure if it’s due to the treats but when I stopped giving them to them, they got better.

This isn't RAW freeze-dried chicken

In case this is helpful for others... This isn't freeze-dried RAW chicken, it's COOKED chicken. It wasn't obvious in the packaging. My bad for not noticing that difference. But also, I felt like the packaging description was misleading because it doesn't explicitly say it's cooked (boiled, steamed, or anything) anywhere. We were giving our cats the Pure Bites freeze-dried raw chicken but thought we would try another brand and it might've been cheaper, to be honest. The texture was also very powdery. The cats didn't like this one. We are back to the Pure Bites freeze-dried raw chicken and the cats are happy.

While my cats did eat it I'm not sure how much they liked it. I tried this as a switch from Omas Pride which has gotten too expensive. The color is also a bit odd, it's very white and does not have a true chicken look to it. I'll probably not buy this again.

Doesn’t make the cut

I tried this because my cats love the freeze dried chicken as a treat. But this brand has hard pieces that don’t easily break up, making it hard for the kitties to chew. I also don’t like the color, it’s very white. Not natural looking, almost like it’s been bleached. And my kitties prefer the brand I buy at my local pet food store.

Too much bones, grizzle

More than half of this product is thrown out. It contains bones and, or grizzle that is not good for my cats, they have to work hard and crunch on it to get it down. Very small portion is actual chicken meat that is softer and easier for them to chew.

Not sure what happened to this!

This is the nightly treat for my 3 brats. This product used to be my go to, no matter the price. I still think it’s a good deal for the price and amount. HOWEVER,

This is the nightly treat for my 3 brats. This product used to be my go to, no matter the price. I still think it’s a good deal for the price and amount. HOWEVER, I had to throw the last 2 bags out! It was so hard to break into pieces and for them to chew! They actually got choked! Too much bone and too sinewy to give them safely. I even bought some in a retail store and it was pretty much the same. Needless to say, I won’t be ordering this again.

My rate for this product is negative 5 stars. We bought these treats for our 2 boys for Christmas and one of our cats almost choked! They were hard to break into smaller pieces. These were more of a dog treat than a cat treat. DO NOT RECOMMEND

My cat is obsessed with these. They’re her favorite treat and I enjoy that they’re pure protein - no fillers or additives. This brand is usually the cheapest per ounce, though I recommend just getting the Dog version. It’s cheaper, and you can easily break up large pieces that are too big for cat mouths. This is also the one (1) treat my cat will actually chew, so I’m praying that helps her teeth at least a little.
