Anyone have problems with squirrels taking off with it? Does it attract the meaner type birds I'd like to discourage haha?
Answer by ChewyJun 14, 2020
This sock feeder contains premium nyjer seed, which primarily attracts finches however, it is possible for squirrels or other birds to have interest. The refillable sock feeder is designed to be hung from a tree limb, hook or other hanging device.

Nope! Ignored by all!

I had tried finch socks before, and no finch or any other bird would come near it. Well, since we were now living in a different city, and there were several house finches and a few goldfinch already here, I thought I would try again. But nope! Hung for several days at the same feeding station, and had NO birds even check it out! The seed seemed fresh, very black and glossy, so as not to let it go to waste, I opened up the sack and poured the seeds into the tube feeder. The nyger seed was eaten readily (didn't see a bunch dumped on the ground on purpose like milo). Hence, the 4-star rating. My product came in a pristine white netted sack stuffed with fresh seeds. The birds here just had no clue or no interest in the sock. You might give it a try to see if finches or other small birds will go for it, but if they don't seem to notice it after several days, try mixing the seed in with other bird seed, or just offer it in a regular feeder. It might take a day or two for the birds to either find or get used to the sock. I left mine almost a week, and then gave up fearing the seed would go stale. I won't buy nyger seed in this format again.

Best Thistle Feeder

My finches vote this feeder the absolute best. Easy to cling to, room for everyone, dispenses seed well without much falling to the ground. The price is right, too, and less plastic waste. Easy to clean compared to those tube feeders. It's just all-around perfect.

sock feeder

Good purchase. This brought another type of bird to my yard, smaller and colorful. One can buy seed separately and reuse the sock. I just find that it stays dirty even after a wash. However, it can be reused. This is a popular area.

Would not order through mail order

The box was flimsy, I’m okay with that except it was packed with heavier items that pushed the bag out of the box and all the seed was loose in the carton. Husband was freaking out thinking it was bugs.

Finch disapproved

I grabbed 3 of these on a sale, and the finches didn’t touch the two we had hanging here in W. Michigan. I even cut some larger holes, but no go, so we finally just threw them away. Not sure if the sale was old stock or we just got some unlucky batches.

Finches love it

Both the feeder and the seed it comes with are very popular with the gold finches in my backyard. I'm looking at one right now eating from it. House finches aren't interested but I've had at least 5 gold finches each day eating from this feeder.

Instant Hit

I hung this last night; the goldfinches found it early this morning, and I've had 3-4 hanging from it all day! I wanted a small amount to test my set up, and this fit the bill. The seed seems fresh, the sock feeder feels like good quality. Now that I have established its success with my winter invaders, I will plan to run larger quantities next winter! I did hang a baffle with the feeder as a weather guard.
