About API Water Conditioners

It’s Smart To Be Proactive!

The best way to keep your aquarium clean is to maintain good water quality. This will help keep your fish strong and vibrant and prevent disease. Water conditioners and test kits from API can help you keep your aquarium water safe and healthy.

How Do I Maintain a Healthy Environment?

It is important to test your aquarium water weekly to ensure it stays healthy for your fish.  In addition, a bi-weekly partial water change of no more than 25% will help reduce toxic buildup, remove debris the filter missed, and replenish the oxygen available to your fish.

Feed Twice Daily and Test Water Weekly

Feed your fish twice a day, check their water temperature, and observe them to make sure they are active. You should also test water quality weekly for optimal safety. For fish to thrive, their water must closely match that of their natural environment—poor water quality can cause stress, illness and even fish loss. The 6 important parameters for healthy aquarium water are ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and water hardness (GH & KH). All of these can vary over time and are invisible to the eye.

Change Water and Restore the Ecosystem

In a closed aquarium environment, there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. That is why you should replace 25% of your aquarium water every two weeks, making sure to add water conditioner to your tap water to make it safe for your fish. You should also change your filter media and clean your gravel monthly. Adding beneficial nitrifying bacteria with API Quick Start when you do will help restore your aquarium’s fragile ecosystem and avoid disruption.

What Do API Products Do and When Do I Use Them?

API Test Kits

Use test kits weekly to monitor water quality parameters, which can vary over time and impact the health of your fish.

API Stress Zyme

Using this every week will help keep your aquarium clean and your gravel and ornaments sludge-free.

API Algaefix

Use weekly to control algae growth and keep aquarium glass, ornaments and plants clean.

API Stress Coat

Use every 2 weeks during water changes to make tap water safe, and when adding fish, or when fish are injured.

I have a 2.5 gallon tank. How many drops would i put in my tank?
Answer by Chewy • May 07, 2018
This application instructions states to use half a teaspoon per gallon.

How long after adding the conditioner is it safe to put in my Betta ?
Answer by Chewy • Aug 03, 2019
If your tank has a filter, you can add your fish right away. If your fish live in a bowl, we recommend waiting a few hours before adding your fish.

Is this safe to use in combination with Quick Start, or is this supposed to be used instead of Quick Start?
Answer by Chewy • Nov 17, 2018
This conditioner may be used along with API Quick Start Freshwater & Saltwater Aquarium Water Treatment however, it may not be necessary, depending on the water quality.

Can I use this in a 1 gallon unfiltered betta tank?
Answer by Chewy • Jun 14, 2018
This 1.7 ounce bottle treats up to 20 gallons.

Wrong listing?

There is a difference between a Betta Water Conditioner and pre-conditioned betta water. A betta Water Conditioner (which is the small bottles of this product) takes out the chlorine and chloramine from tap water to make it suitable for housing fish. This Betta Water this site claimed was the bigger bottle of the Betta Water Conditioner is not the same. Pre-conditioned betta water is not a conditioner to clear out those chemicals from water. It is water that has already been conditioned for use. The site has this product listed as the bigger bottle of "Betta Water Conditioner" and gives it the description of that product but this Betta Water is not that product. At first I thought I made the mistake of ordering the wrong product until I looked again today to see that it is listed falsely. This 31 fl oz is not the same product in any way shape or form, and it is misleading.

Great water conditioner for filtered betta tank

I've been using this for a 2-gallon filtered tank with a single betta for 2+ years now without any issues. The water is never cloudy and my betta has been healthy for the past couple of years. Plus, it's inexpensive, which is nice.

Top 1000 Contibutor

Seems to work fine

I have used this for almost a month and the fish is doing well. My only complaint is that the water clouded up, so I had to add a Fluval water conditioner and now the tank is in great shape.

Great water conditioner

I use this along with stress coat plus when changing water. About six drops. My betta, eggplant is thriving. I only wish it came in a larger size.

Does What Expect

This product does what I need it to do. However I wish I would come in a bigger size I have 3 betta tanks (10 gallon, 5 gallon and a 3 gallon) and I normally need 2 bottles a month

Works as expected

Been using this for my betta for a while now and he's alive and thriving, so I can only assume that this is working well for him! The bottle is a good size and lasts quite a bit of water changes. It's about 3 drops per cup, which is about 48 drops per gallon.
