Smart Clean

I thought it would do a better job at cleaning the water. However, the top of the filter tube extends higher than my old one so I cannot open the top of the tank

I thought it would do a better job at cleaning the water. However, the top of the filter tube extends higher than my old one so I cannot open the top of the tank more than about 1/3 of the way which is very inconvenient and I will have to remove the filtration device to clean anything in the tank or add water.

The Aqueon SmartClean Power Filter with EcoRenew Cartridge is an impressive piece of filtration engineering. The updated design is a welcome evolution from older models—sleek, efficient, and easy to maintain. My original plan was to deploy this unit on my 55-gallon brackish puffer tank as a supplemental powerhouse alongside its existing canister filter. My puffer, “Puffy,” is essentially the aquatic equivalent of a toddler eating spaghetti: adorable, but spectacularly messy. Unfortunately, I overlooked one key detail—the black tank edging on a 55-gallon model is noticeably thicker than on a 30-gallon tank, meaning the filter simply wouldn’t fit. A tragic twist in my aquatic master plan. The silver lining? My 30-gallon tank has now become the lucky recipient of both canister and SmartClean filtration, resulting in water so pristine the fish probably think they’re living in a luxury spa.

Small but mighty!

I've had a lot of hang on back (hob) filters in the past, and so far this Aqueon SmartClean filter has been one of the easiest to use! You just put it together, hang it on the tank (it even fits my thick frameless tank), fill it with water and it's good to go! Its quiet and doesn't even make that awful motor grinding noise as it starts up and all I hear is the trickle of the water flow! I think I'm most impressed with the way you can use it for water changes with the Smart Clean feature! You basically move the water spout so the water flows out from it instead of into the tank, and then you can either attatch tubing or use a bucket to collect the dirty water! While I usually use a siphon, this has really come in clutch for my 10 gallon quarantine tank that's below my bigger tank, as its always been difficult to get suction! Overall it's working great for me and I definitely recommend it!

The filter cartridges are eco friendly and can be composted. It also has an adjustable flow rate control knob built into the siphon tube. I feel that with these new features the filter will do an excellent job of keeping my aquarium clean and my fish healthy!

I absolutely swear by Aqueon filters! I have them in all 5 of my fish tanks. They require no priming and automatically restart if the power goes out (which it does a lot here). Now w/ the SmartClean water changes are so easy! You simply take take out the SmartClean nozzle and turn it on. It can be connected to tubing too. So easy! I love this new feature! If you are a fish enthusiast I recommend Aqueon filters!
