Cat litter is a loose filler material you put in your cat’s litter box to absorb urine and odors from excrement. Cats naturally like to “go” in sandy or loose soil areas and cover it up, so a cat box filled with litter should provide a familiar bathroom environment. You can choose a scoopable cat litter that lets you scoop out both urine clumps and feces, or a regular litter that just absorbs urine and contains odor.

How often should I change my cat's litter?

You should change your cat’s litter regularly to ensure it is clean, hygienic, and attractive to your cat. If you use non-clumping litter, change it out once or twice a week—you may need to change it more often if you have more than one cat or cats with certain health issues, including seniors. If you use clumping litter, you can change out the litter less frequently, but once a week is usually a good rule of thumb. Scoop the box daily and let your nose be a guide—if you can smell a bad odor, your kitty will find it even more unpleasant.

Is it safe to sleep in a room with cat litter?

It is generally considered safe to sleep in a room with cat litter, provided you don’t have certain health issues and aren’t pregnant. Those with respiratory issues like asthma or allergies should probably avoid sleeping in a room with cat litter, as both the dust from litter and the ammonia in urine may trigger irritation. Those who are pregnant or immunocompromised should also sleep elsewhere due to the risk of toxoplasmosis, which can cause complications for the baby or serious illness in compromised adults. And even healthy adults may wish to avoid sleeping near a litter box to avoid unpleasant smells.

What is cat litter made of?

Cat litter can be made of various materials. Clay cat litter used to be the standard, but now you can find cat litter made from things like wheat, pine, corn, paper, nut shells, grass seed, silica crystals, tofu, plant pulp, and more. Some formulas also include baking soda or other additives for odor control, plus fragrances in the scented varieties. Plant-based cat litters made from natural ingredients may also include bentonite clay for clumping, and some of these may be scented, as well. Be sure to read the cat litter label carefully so you can know what you’re getting, especially if your kitty is picky about scents or textures!
