The equipment you need for a fish pond includes a pump, heater, filter, net, decor, hardscape and lighting, if you are using it. You will also need fish pond supplies like water care additives, testing supplies and food for your fish.
You set up a fish pond by digging out the area and lining it with a pond liner. There are also above-ground pond liner kits you can use. Next, set up accessories like a filter, pump, and fountain or bubbler to help keep your water clean, circulating and properly aerated. You can then decorate your pond with hardscape, rocks, pond decor and aquatic plants that are appropriate for your fish and climate.
Prepare pond water for fish by letting it sit for at least 72 hours after filling. If you filled your pond with chlorinated tap water, you can use water conditioner to help speed up the dechlorination process. Many pond enthusiasts also recommend "cycling" the water through the pump and filter for a few days to allow beneficial bacteria levels to rise before adding fish. It is also a good idea to test your water before adding fish to make sure the pH is right and there are safe levels of chlorine, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.
Many kinds of fish can live in your pond, but some are better choices than others. For backyard ponds, koi and goldfish are popular varieties, as they are colorful and tolerant of cold temperatures in winter. Many people also like to keep high-fin sharks, a relative of koi and goldfish, in their ponds. Pond sturgeon and golden orfes are popular choices for outdoor ponds, as well. Other common pond fish include weather loaches, mollies, guppies, plecos and red shiners. Be sure your pond is large enough for your fish, that the fish you choose can cohabitate well, and that your climate is appropriate for their needs.
