Keep your guinea pigs well hydrated with a guinea pig water bottle designed just for them. A small animal water bottle is probably the most popular way people choose to provide water for their guinea pigs. The best guinea pig water bottles will feature a cage-mounted design to save space and a rust- and chew-resistant stainless spout with a no-drip ball closure design. Top-fill models make refilling extra easy, while large capacity reservoirs save time and trouble refilling. BPA-free plastic and glass bottles can also help ensure your pets aren't being exposed to toxins in their water.
You may choose to serve your pets their water in guinea pig bowls instead of or in addition to a water bottle. This can be helpful for older or ailing pets who find sitting up to drink from a bottle difficult, or it may just suit a picky guinea pig's personal preference. Look for tip-resistant bowls if you go this route and remember to change the water frequently to keep it fresh and clean.
It's a good idea to keep several water sources in your guinea pig cage along with feeding areas for hay, pellets, fresh veggies and occasional guinea pig treats. A healthy guinea pig habitat should also have guinea pig toys for play and a few cozy hideouts and beds for sleeping and privacy. Chewy has the guinea pig supplies you need to keep your cavies hydrated, fed, exercised and well-rested. Guinea pigs need either a water bottle or a bowl to drink out of. Although a water bowl will suffice, bottles are usually recommended because they keep the water cleaner, won't tip over like bowls can and usually hold more. Some guinea pigs will drink more water if provided a water bottle, while others will find the bowl more comfortable for drinking. Experiment and see what works best for your pets if you are unsure.
A guinea pig water bottle should be high enough that your pets can drink out of it without stretching or straining upward. Putting them just above head height, so the spout lines up roughly with their mouth when they look up, should be the ideal height for your guinea pigs. If you have guinea pigs of different sizes, you may want to provide separate water bottles at the appropriate height for each or try to find an average height that works for everyone.
Stop your guinea pig water bottle from leaking by making sure the rubber ring seal is properly mounted. If you're having trouble with the spout leaking, you can try tapping the ball at the end of the spout to re-seat it or give the bottle a squeeze to reposition it that way. If you're having trouble with an older bottle leaking, it may be time to replace it with a new water bottle.
