Buckeye Nutrition Foal Starter Milk-Based Pelleted Horse Feed is an easily digestible and palatable diet specifically designed for foals under the age of three months. This milk-based feed is ideal for foals transitioning from nursing and aids in compensating for the natural decrease in production of milk during lactation. It also provides essential vitamins and trace minerals to help support healthy growth and development. Buckeye Nutrition Foal Starter Milk-Based Pelleted Horse Feed contains high levels of vitamins E and C and selenium to help optimize your foal's natural immune defenses and keep them healthy.

Foal Starter should be the only feed offered to all nursing foals because the young foal's digestive system digests milk-based products better than cereal grains and protein. By three to four months of age, other enzymes develop which allows forage, oats, corn and soybeans to be more efficiently utilized.

When a foal shows an interest in eating dry feed, provide FOAL STARTER. This may occur as soon as one week after birth and will depend on how much milk the mare produces. FOAL STARTER should be the only feed offered to all nursing foals because the young foal's digestive system digests milk-based products better than cereal grains and protein. By three to four months of age, other enzymes develop which allows forage, oats, corn, and soybeans to be more efficiently utilized. Nursing foals should have free choice access to FOAL STARTER and should eat 1 lb/100 lb of body weight each day. See chart below:
Foal Type | Age | Feeding Rate | Average Daily Consumption |
---|---|---|---|
All nursing, orphaned, or rejected foals consuming Mare's Milk Plus | Nursing to 3-4 months* | Free choice | 1-lb per 100-lb body weight |
Orphaned or rejected foals (as sole diet) | Up to 3-4 months* | Free choice | 2-lb per 100-lb body weight |
Gradual weaning from Mare’s Milk Plus should begin at six weeks of age and be completed by ten weeks of age. At this time, Foal Starter is the only dry feed to be offered free-choice. After three months of age, a growth ration such as Gro 'N Win or Buckeye Nutrition Growth should be gradually introduced into the diet.
MAKES MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER. RECOMMEND 100%. BEEN TRYING FOR 12 DAYS TO GET NEWBORN ON LIQUID REPLACER.
Great product. Very happy with the nutritional aspects of product. Very palatable for the foal. Highly recommend.
Great stuff. Orphaned filly loves it. Has helped her tremendously transition from bottle to feed. Fast shipping. Awesome customer service!
I supplemented my filly's diet with this after she was about a month old. She would NOT eat it at first. I stuck my face near it and realized that it smelled awful, like PlayDoh. I got creative and sprinkled Farnam's Apple Electrolytes on it and now she loves the stuff. She is growing fast and strong and when she's done with this bag, I'll probably transition her to Buckeye's "Growth" feed.
I am very happy Buckeye Nutrition came up with a product for foals that lost their momma and refusing to take a bottle. He has been eating this product for a 3wks now and he is happy, healthy foal.
All of my Foals Love a Little Snack of this Daily! They Gobble it down & look Fantastic! Feeding this Product up to their 5-6 month, to help with Weaning & their Pre-Sale Look!
colt eating it with no issues. Fed dry and colt would drink water and make it into a slurry feed. Still ate it up. Colt when started on it was less than 2 months old. Still eating it and also giving other colt that is on a mare some to get her started eating grain and hope to help not pull mare down more.
We have a mini foal that was rejected by Momma and we are feeding Ultra 24 milk replacer every 3 hours we bought the buck eye milk starter and put in a bowl a small amount after two weeks she is nibbling it when the bottles dont come our hope is at night she will eat this. We baby her not letting her be in rain the main think feeding a baby foal is not to when you bottle feed to elevate the bottle if the milk goes in the lungs it will die from pneumonia keep the bottle on the level let the baby suck .BE CAREFUL AND HOPEFULLY AFTER A COUPLE WEEKS YOUR FOAL WILL START EATING BUCKEYE BUT BOTTLE FEEDING IS WHAT IS NEEDING FOR A LONG TIME IF YOU LOVE YOUR BABY AND WE DO
I bought this for my orphan foal who lost her mom at birth. I can't get her to touch it. She eats everything but this. I tried giving it to the older horses and they all hate it.
Wonderful small pellets that are easy to feed young foals either dry or wet. Foal looks fantastic .
