FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Just what I've been looking for

By jrtmom on Nov 20, 2021

This capsule has simplified my life, no pill cutting as I've previously had to do and the medication is half the cost of the other pharmacy I was using.

    quality product

By karen on Sep 22, 2021

Highly recommend this product for cat's with IBD. I have battled this disease since my kitten was diagnosed with it. I have tried different foods for him and some of them help but until I had him on this prescription, he still was throwing up. This is a very good product if your fur baby has this problem.

    Fantastic little capsule!! (2mg)

By CuppyArgos on Aug 11, 2021

I was so excited when I saw this become available on Chewy, and the capsules did not disappoint! I generally don’t feel the need to review prescription meds as there is usually nothing for me to review—they work. However, Budesonide has to be compounded, so I’ve been purchasing this for my pup at a local pharmacy where it is mixed with chicken flavored oil. It’s messy, and she often spits it out, or moves her face as I’m trying to put the syringe in her mouth. It’s just an overall stressful experience. This little capsule has been such a game changer! I just hide it in some food, and no fuss!! My little pooch is on so many meds, and when they’re small and easy to give like these are, it is I was so excited when I saw this become available on Chewy, and the capsules did not disappoint! Wonder medicine!

By Rocky on Jul 22, 2021

My cat had bad diarrhea for almost a year and this medicine worked wonders for him. A little hard in the beginning to give but once you get into it, it's no problem! I am so glad my vet started him on it because otherwise my little cat would have been in bad shape.
