How many should I buy for my 5 gallon tank?

The general rule is 1 to 2 pounds per gallon, but if you want to be more precise, you can use the following equation;
In inches: Length x Width x Bed Depth Desired. Then divide by 1,728. Then multiply by the approximate substrate density: Aragalives™: 100 lbs. Your answer is how many pounds you will need.
What does it mean that this sand has an experation date. Does it mean I have to constantly change the sand to new sand?

The “best by” date is simply a suggested sell by date, and has no bearing on the sand once it is in the aquarium. It does not “spoil” in the bag, nor does it spoil in the aquarium. Once in the aquarium, the sand will function chemically and biologically for the life of the aquarium and does not need changing.
