Questions & Answers

8 Customer Questions

Where is the pork sourced from and what ingredients are sourced from China? Thank you
Answer by ChewyDec 31, 2019
Dr. Elsey's ingredients are carefully sourced and chosen based on quality. They try to source as many ingredients from the United States, but many vitamins and minerals included in pet food aren’t manufactured in the US. While nearly 90% of thier ingredients are from the US, they source others from Switzerland, Germany, France, China, Scotland and Canada. Dr. Elsey's extremely careful with the selection of each vendor to ensure they stick to equal or greater manufacturing standards than we have here in the US.

Does this have the AAFCO seal of approval?
Answer by ChewyAug 06, 2020
Dr. Elsey's has taken great care to formulate a complete, high-quality diet to meet your cat’s nutritional requirements during all life stages. The phosphorus levels have increased slightly to meet AAFCO 2020 guidelines for minimum phosphorous content in a non-prescription cat food that is suitable for all stages of life based on the requirements of a healthy cat. AAFCO does not regulate, approve, certify or endorse animal feed or pet food in any way, and AAFCO does not review an individual company's label or labeling. AAFCO members discuss and approve model legislation that is recommended to the states for adoption as individual state laws and regulations.

Does this variety have the same “no-to-low oxalate to help prevent calcium oxalate crystals” as the chicken and turkey flavors have?
Answer by ChewyMay 03, 2019
All of the formulas in Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein line features low oxalate by excluding plants commonly found in competitive diets to help ensure healthy kidney function and an active lifestyle.

Not having it

The cat I purchased this for has IBD. He can eat rabbit and pork. He usually eats Hounds & Gatos pork pate but I have been unable to get it for some time. He also loves Lotus Just Juicy pork as well. I bought this pork pate seeing it was similar to the Hounds & Gatos one. My Gus who is not a picky eater AT ALL would not touch this. In fact he backed away from his plate!

Terrible cat food

3 cats stopped eating the new pork. They used to love the previous cans. Now they cover it up as if it is excrement! Now won’t eat any of the flavors! What has changed to this high end cat food? I stopped the subscription of dr Elsie foods.

My search for new flavors goes on

What's not to love about this food? High quality proteins. No gums, nothing artificial. It looks good, it smells good and yet I've tried serving 3 cans so far to her and my hungry girl just sniffs at the food in her dish and walks away. :(

Why, why, why????

My cat loved this food and he not only is a very picky eater, but suffers from IBS. The pork recipe was out of stock for quite a while because Dr. Elsey's was transitioning to a new packer (I e-mailed Dr. Elsey's). As often happens, the pork recipe is NOT the same as it had been previously. I still have some old cans left (I stocked up) and kitty loves those, but he would rather starve than eat the current product. Such a disappointment. I have no idea what to feed him. I ordered a few other cat foods from different manufacturers and am keeping my fingers crossed that kitty will eat one of those.

My cats won't touch it!

Ordered this, hoping it would fit into my cats' "novel diet." Unfortunately, they won't touch it. am hoping to return the rest of the case.

Great product, even better customer support!

I originally got this for an elimination diet for one of our cats suspected of having a food allergy. While this may not be the perfect product for that (it has eggs and fish oil, so not 100% single protein--still waiting on my vet for the thumbs up), it is otherwise a great product--very high quality ingredients and the cats like it too. But the best part has been the wonderful customer service after I contacted them with my concerns for using as an elimination diet. The responses have been quick, detailed, and very personal--not the kind of customer service the large manufacturers provide. Will be making this and other products from Dr. Elsey's a regular part of our cat's diet!

Great Food for IBD kitty

This is the one wet food that has helped heal my kitty's inflammation. I fed it solely for 3 months it helped reduce the inflammation & pain. She also takes 2.5mg Prednisolone every other day. After the 3 months I introduced back some dry food as she really likes to have both - I feed her the Hill's prescription Z/D dry as it is the only one that she can tolerate and she really likes it. Over the last couple of years we have tried many different food brands and proteins and we have discovered that she cannot eat ANY poultry, fish or peas. I also believe Guar gum bothers her. We tried beef, rabbit & venison to but she just didn't do as good on those. I highly recommend trying this food. The only drawback (and reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) is I wish it tasted better - my kitty gets bored of it and I can tell she doesn't love it but so far it is the only one that truly helps her system. She is a chronic vomiter and tends to get diarrhea also. She is just about to turn 7.

Great ingredients, kitty loves it

I wasn't sure about the pork flavor (how often does a cat kill and eat a pig?), but it was all that was in stock in the brand so I tried it. Glad I did. My cat loves it and it seems to be good for her IBS and her weight. The only caveat is that one of the cans burst in the case. Not sure if that was the fault of the delivery service or if the cans are just too wimpy.

2/3 cats recommend

I usually get the chicken/turkey/rabbit kinds, but chewy was out of it, and it was either pork or salmon. Since cats are from inland savannahs, my understanding is that their ancestral diet consisted of birds and mammals, not fish, so I got this. 2 of my cats were fine with it, not as enthusiastic as they were for chicken or turkey kinds, but my 3rd child decided abruptly that he was Jewish and refused it wholesale (Bubbe would be proud). Fortunately I still had chicken kibble, so he crunched on that. Probably won't buy this again, but will save the rest for emergencies, ie delayed shipping/running out of food. Overall probably good quality like the rest of the brand, but my boy has never turned down any food before in the year that I've had him, so I was surprised.

Cat didn't like, but I love Chewy

My cat is so extremely picky and borderline malnourished. I selected this food on high recommendations of vet. Dr. Elseys is such a respected name. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the manufacturing is reduced limiting the flavors available. I took a gamble on the pork, and lost. HOWEVER, when I contacted Chewy they were wonderful and speedy. They simply said donate and try again..refunding me immediately. Their fast and extremely welcoming service I love.
