how do the min/max settings work? do you need to hook up a heat lamp and bulb?

The Exo Terra Combometer Digital Thermometer & Hygrometer can be installed with hook and loop fastener or by simply sliding it into position on top of the Exo Terra Compact Top or Linear Fluorescent Top. It has a programmable minimum/maximum memory setting. It can be set up by pressing the MIN/MAX button once to display the maximum temperature/humidity readout and press the MIN/MAX twice to display the minimum temperature.
second request. does this combimeter have an on/off feature or does just stay on until battery dies?

This combometer is not designed with an on/off button.
Can this be used with a heat mat

This Combometer may be used with a heat mat as long as it does not directly come in contact with the mat.
Does this plug in? do you have to use it with only a specific tank?

This thermo-hygrometer is battery operated and works with any size tank. This thermo-hygrometer can be installed with a screw, an included strip, or by sliding it into position on top of the Exo Terra Compact Top or Dual Top Canopy.

Love this device.

I have two of them. 1 for the cool side and one for the hot side of a 20L reptile tank and they work great. They are helpful tool for maintaining optimal humidity and temp. Could not imaging having a proper setup without them. My only complaint is that I wish the LCD screen was backlit or had a light button on it so it made reading them easier. As it stand I have to use a small flashlight to read them. For that, 4 stars. They could a 5 with a lit screen.

Great product

Exo terra as always delivers a great product have had no problems with it. My only issue is that there is no off or on button but even with this flaw it's so much more affordable than most alternatives.

Broke in a couple of months

Had one for a couple of months and it stopped working.
