I put my dog on this because he is itchy. Not excessively like some dogs but I thought changing his diet with half of this kibble and half raw might help with his dry skin and allergies. I do see a little relief but he has also been on half raw longer than this kibble. He does love this kibble though and I think for a big dog he prefers the bigger kibble chunks.

Happy dogs

I’ve used First Mate for 5 years now. My dogs like it. Over time they want a change in flavor, this was the latest shift and they are happy.

My dog is a picky eater - to the point where she'd lost weight. A pet shop in Tahoe recommended this brand, partly because it offers a number of different flavors, which I need to rotate and keep the dog's interest. The kibble is a nice size, even in the flavors where it's not labelled "large breed".

I did a TON of research on food before bringing home our dog, and this food fit every requirement perfectly, so I was super excited to have found it. We tried to transition her to it slowly from her old food (mixing a small amount in at first to get her used to it), but she was 100% uninterested, even to the point of picking through the kibble to spit these pieces out. It was so expensive I kept at it, however, and by the time we got to about half this and half her old food, she went on a hunger strike for almost two days, refusing to eat. We went back to the old food and started the transition process again. This time, she relented and began to eat it--and she got diarrhea. We thought maybe it was just the transition, but by the time we got to her eating about half this stuff, she ate grass and vomited once, and then developed severe, pure liquid diarrhea that had her getting up every 90 minutes in the night to go out. We took her off kibble and gave her rice and chicken and pedialyte as instructed, and then went back to the old food...and the diarrhea cleared up. The only constant with the gross poop was this food. This food seemed perfect by the numbers, but despite the expense it's no longer worth the risk to my poor dog's system.
